There is a literautre professor whohas been nominating Dylan every year since 1996 forthe Noble prize in literature. While the winner of the noble prize has already been given, I found this article interesting and was wondering what some of you think. http://entertainment.msn.com/music/article.aspx?news=169849 The article basically goes into the debate of wether or not music lyrics should be considered literature, and if Dylan deserves to receive this honor. I don't know how many of you are Dylan fans, but it is my opinion that he is one of the greatest songwriter/poets of our time and definatlly deserves this honor. It does't mean that all songwriting is literature, I think we can all tell the differance, but there is no mistaking ture poetry. So check it out and tell me what you think. One Love! Yeah man. I mean it really gets no better then him. I love alot of music, but he is more than a musician, he is a poet in the truest sense.A few years back I saw him with Paul simon and it was AWSOME!!! I am so glad I got the chance. I mean so many people cover his music, because they know whats up. I even have a bob marley album where he covers "like a rolling stone", even mr. marley knew, dylan is the man!!!

I have to,once again, say right on ramble! Bobby Z is definitely, and without question, the ultimate poet. I consider him a poet who just happens to have vast musical talent--a rare combination. I am looking forward to jumping into his new bio "Chronicles" over the holidays. Peace.

Did anyone check out the top 500 songs list inRolling Stone? It lists "Like a Rolling Stone" as #1-I couldn't agree more.
If you take the time to read through the list-and I had the time on a flight a week ago-then you will find some AWESOME stories about each song. I particulary found the "What's Going On" story about Marvin Gaye intriguing and quite sad.

OK, did anyone else get a chance to see it? I did, and let me just say, the Dylan segment was not long enough. It did seem that Dylan did not really even want to be there, so I am grateful for any amount of interview time. They talked alot about his status in life, "legend, profit" things of that nature, which he does not see himself as. He is just as I imagined he would be, and I idolize him all the more now. I thought it was great, and they took alot of quotes from the book that are getting me quite excited about reading it. So hope some of you got a chance to check it out.

Missed dylan on SM (workin'). Read articleabout interview. Soundedjust like hisself--downplayed his talent, impact of his poetry and music on culture and his obvious icon status. Alotoftoday's"entertainers" couldlearn a thing or twofrom this man, the least of which is some friggin' modesty. (IMHO)
ramble on rose
12-07-2004, 04:39 PM
You got that right ragmop, I was cooking dinner last night thinking more about the interview, and they touched on dylan's dislike for the media, and watching the interview I understood why. While he quoted the book a bit they didnt really talk about it much. He didnt really ask questions about dylan, he mostly asked him what he thought about what others think about him. It just wasnt long enough to make it what they could have. But it was cool to see, sorry you missed it. Edited by: ramble on rose

Just finished "Chronicles, Vol 1". Awesome book. First and last thirds of the book give you a glimpse into the influencesthat shaped his body of work. They also painta vivid picture of NYC's folk scene in the early 1960s. Middle third chronicles his New Orleans recording sessions for "Oh Mercy" in 1989.
It is a must read for any fan.

Man . . . I had to come home. There for just over 72 hours. Slept maybe 10 hours total. Found Santa Monica to be one niceplace. Loved it. Diverse as it comes. Met some great people. Sweet greens. People watched as much as I could. Weather was chilly, but it didn't matter.
My chef buddy in Chicago had arranged main floor dining at Beverly Hills Spaggo Friday night for my group. Mind blowing feast. Special chef menu, kitchen tour, the works. Very sweet. Saw my life (a la Courtney Cox) literally pass before my eyes. Damn.
Attendedsweetsushi seminarin Hermosa Beach. Very intense and hardcore Japanese chef taught it, but I took away so many kernels.
Definitely going back this summer. For now, some sleep . . .

My dad has been a big Dylan fan for some time. Hell, my middle
name is Dylan. He took me to see him back when Dylan toured with
the Dead and Tom Petty. I saw Dylan again in the mid 90's.
My dad's birthday is coming up and I got 3 tickets for the April 13th
show at Shea's here in Buffalo so my wife and I can take him to the
show. 11th row! Shea's is an amazing venue too, nice
acoustics and a beautiful building. I can't wait to give him the

As for Bobby Z, I cannot wait for these releases. Altho I am an "old fart" according to PERRY, I am not old enuf (unfortunately) to have had the chance to see the manwhen he exploded (mid-to-late 60s). Thankfully he has rearranged and adapted many, many times in his career. The man is so multi-dimensional it is sickening.
I read a critic's review of his book "Chronicles" where the critic more or less said, "G.D. you, Bob Dylan!"--the critic had written 10 books in his career and he felt that their combined qualities didn'tmeasure up to Bobby's first and only. It's not enough that he is a great poet, songwriter, composer, performer and artist--now he decides to pick up writing and he excels at that as well. Legend in every sense.
Thanks for listening y'all. Peace. . .

what a great film, I was so upset when it ended only because I wanted more. I was hoping they would go even further into career. I love dylans modest behavior. He has such a free spirit about him and never let anyone try to hold him down into a mold of what they wanted him to be.
I loved hearing about how all his fans got so pissed when he went electric on the second half of his shows and booed him, yet when he played like a rolling stone they all sang along. Good stuff. ragmop I hope you got a chance to catch the whole thing last nite. Mr. C love the poster.

09-28-2005, 06:18 PM
Saw both parts. Loved them. Itcaptured hisdrive, hisindependence and his determination to travel HIS path and no one else's. And I loved Joan Baez's insights (btw, one helluva sexy woman, IMO).
Going electric was a HUGE deal--not for him--but for his folk/acoustic fans, which I thought thefilm conveyed very well (actually almost centered around that). His committment to his music,in the face thatopposition only makes me admirethe man more. Very few artists have ever simply played for themselves, as a career. Very few.
I too wish the film had gone further into his career--it only covered 6 of his 44-year career. But footage of live Dylan would have been pretty sparse until the late 1970's and 1980's. Plus the later footage wouldn't fare as well when compared to his youthfullook, performances and voice.
Great couple of nite's TV watching though.
Mr. Cleanface
09-30-2005, 03:02 PM
Yep, I think Scorscese needs to get to work on parts II andIII. That could easily go another 10 hours. And Joan Baez is sexy as hell! She looks damn good! (Easy Ragmop aka Old Man...smileys/smiley2.gif)
Bob doesn't come off as the easiest person in the world to talk to. Seems very judgemental and condesending, almost confrontational sometimes, like when he was challenging/yelling at the interviewer in the early footage. Talking to someone tonight about it, they asked if I had seen the movie "Don't Look Back." Have you guys seen this? They said he was a huge a-hole throughout the entire film.Sounds good, but I've never seen it anywhere.
Definitely a very confident, cocky, rough guy and definitely a peaceful person...but from what I've heard and seen, doesn't seem likea soft spoken or soft souled man. Badass/musical genius no doubt.
Whattya think Rag and Rose? True, myth, driven crazy by the media??? Thoughts....?

My impression: Dylan is a poetfirst, who just happens to be atremendous musical talent as well.Like Dylan, most poets are independent-thinking loners who tend not to fully understand, or have time for, the triviality of the pop media culture. That, of course, creates conflict whenthe media is THE vehicle for your musical expression.
But if you think of himas a poet,to me it explains alot of his behavior. Imagine any poet (Thoreau, Sandburg, Emerson, etc.) in front of lights, cameras and microphones being asked questions by a media who 1) hasn't read your material, 2) doesn't comprehend the material, and 3) focuses on you as the poet and not the words you have expressed. Frustrating to say the least, when as a poet, your materialiseverything to you. Plus, he has always spoken ofhimself as a poet--never stopping his development or growth, not staying in one place too long, never being one- or two-, but multi-dimensional instead.
In his novel, Dylan made it very clear that he was interested in writing and performing his songs and developinghis sound. Others wanted to elevate(and pigeonhole) him into being thespokesperson for an entire generation and certain politicalmovements. The more they pushed him to be so, the more he pushedback. (Hence that speech he gave when getting thatliberty or freedom award).
And of course he is an asshole. Very few artistic people are not. Jim Morrison (another poet/musician)--asshole. Van Morrisson--asshole. But I don't think that he is one just to be one. I truly think that he is bored with a lot of things and people. Just my opinion.
Mr. C, read Chronicles. It is a great read (sorry, no pictures--I know that's important to you!) Seriously, though, it explains alot about him.Edited by: ragmop

Thanks Ragmop, nice response. Have you seen "Don't Look Back?" I heard there is another part in the film where Bob and John Lennon are in a limo, drinking and smoking pot and Dylan gets sick...smileys/smiley11.gif
And I do need to check out Chronicles, I've been meaning to. What, wait...no pictures. smileys/smiley7.gif Well, I guess I'll try, but it might be tough.

Never saw "Don't Look Back." But now I'm interested. I haven't mentioned it, and Marty steered very far from it, but Bobby had his greenage issues. Did any of you catch his eyes at that one press conference? He was GONE. Plus, in some of the live performance footage, he was struggling to keep his eyes open.
That Marty skirted around that part of Bob's life is my small critique of the film.

don't look back is certinly going to the top of the list. My opinion is basically the same as rag. Like I said earlier that is one of the things I admire about the man he is a free spirit. He lets noone hold him down or back, he does what he feels. He is an artist in a true sense of the word. Lived for his work for himself. He kept true to himself.
Being somewhat of a poet myself I know how personal it is when you do share that piece of you. I don't know if I feel hecame across as an asshole, while I watched the film and the interviews I really felt for him. Watching people ask insignifigant and pointless questions. I loved the way he responed to them, with a smartass remark or some off the wall answer, and I thought, shit I would do the same damn things to those cocks. They all wanted was him to be somebody other then bob dylan, and he wouldn't take that shit. So I guess he kinda was an asshole, but when it comes to the compromise of your art, the very soul of you, you can't back down.
Like whenJoan Baezsaid everyone would ask her where bob was when she went to protests and sit-ins, he never went he didn't want to be the leader of a generation. Another thing she had about him was that not only did he not want to do those things he would tell you he didn't want to. He didn't try to pretend he was up front and honest about his intention.
He did look so baked in that interview it was great, because so was I. Whar about when he was in the car where the girls tried to stow away with the luggage. Completely gone. nice.Wasn't long enough at all in my opinion. I could have watched it for hoursas well.Edited by: ramble on rose

It has been a while since I have read anything on Dylan, but I found one. It is in reference to a show Dylan played for the previous pope and how the current one was opposed to it. Here is the first paragraph from it:
{VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI was opposed to Bob Dylan appearing at a youth event with the late Pope John Paul in 1997 because he considered the pop star the wrong kind of “prophet,” Benedict writes in a new book issued on Thursday.}
Is that not insane? The pope is takling trash about Bobby Z! Not cool pope, not cool. One Love.

A background story
A little history about the source: These were bootlegged in the late 70s or early 80s in poor quality. In 1985 or 86, my friend, Chris D., worked in a video store in Nashville (I lived near there). I had helped him get some space shot videos from NBC, so to return the favor, he called one day and asked if I wanted a cassette of the Cash session. He got it from a guy who found it in his attic, in a box marked "BDJC". That guy's father worked for CBS Nashville in 1969 and made a 1 inch mono reel-to-reel copy of the original session tape. He made Chris a cassette from the 1 inch tape. Chris copied the cassette, and gave me the original. In the fall of 1986, I went to a Dylan collectors meet in Chicago, and we daisy-chained 15 cassette decks together. I was second in the chain, and everyone past me copied my tape. By then, I had added the second "One Too Many Mornings" and the three songs from a betamax tape of the JC TV show, so this CD is one generation down from my original cassette. The original bootleg CD came out about two months later. "Mornings" has a tone shift in the middle, from the video when they change from the studio footage to the control room footage, but I minimized this a bit with some EQ, which you can hear when it switches. I tried to balance the tones more than on the source video, but there is more echo on the control room footage. The CDs come from the tape that was copied in Chicago. Someday I will digitize the original cassette and make a better copy, but there probably won't be much improvement over this one. I do now have a much better source for the JC TV show video; the JC show from ABC on this tape has several glitches. "One Too Many Mornings" from the PBS Cash documentary is now available on a legitimate DVD.

Great lyrics:
Shadows are falling and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep time is running away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there
Well my sense of humanity has gone down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writing what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there
Well, I've been to London and I've been to gay Paree
I've followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down on the bottom of a world full of lies
I ain't looking for nothing in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden seems more than I can bear
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there
I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm moving, but I'm standing still
Every nerve in my body is so vacant and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear a murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there.

I'm not really a tombstone visitng kind of person, like as if it were a holiday excursion of who's who, but something about seeing Kerouac's name etched in stone is pleasing. I think it could be written by a finger in a still wet sidewalk or spray painted on the side of the building and the effect would be the same. An unexpected association to give pause to a day, if you get me.

DYLAN, a career-spanning retrospective of the iconic artist's music, and the brand new DVD The Other Side of The Mirror, the first ever release of Bob Dylan at The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 featuring over 80 minutes of unreleased performances.
DYLAN will come in a 18-track Single Disc, a 51-track 3-CD set, and a 51-track Deluxe Limited Edition Boxset which comes housed in a red cloth covered box and featuring CDs designed to look like replica vinyls in their own sleevecases along with a 40 page expanded booklet and 10 limited edition postcard prints.
If you pre-Order any version of DYLAN together with the The Other Side of the Mirror DVD from his MySpace page, they'll ship both to arrive around 10/2 -- weeks before the DVD's 10/30 release date.
In addition you'll also get an immediate free download of Mark Ronson (http://myspace.com/markronson)'s remix of "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)."
(you can read more about that here (http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/08/03/mark-ronson-speaks-the-full-story-behind-his-controversial-dylan-remix/))
You can pre-order The Other Side Of The Mirror & Dylan now @ the Sony Music Store.
Check out more Bob Dylan at www.dylan07.com (http://www.dylan07.com) and http://www.legacyrecordings.com/Bob-Dylan.aspx
If I may editorialize, I have to say the box sets probably don't have anything serious fans haven't already heard. More for collectors or newbies who want to an easy to digest collection of Dylan stuff. DVD sounds cool though.
Also, if the Mark Ronson remix makes you ill, here's Dylan in 1996 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivtJxRstSsE) performing that song live.

So, I saw the movie Mona Lisa Smile a few years ago, and I remember that Tori Amos had a musical scene in it, but I didn't recall the song she performed until I heard it playing today at work.
It was Dylan's "You Belong To Me (http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/kQ4TFe6LBT4/)" done in kind of a light jazz/cabaret style (patience, the link took a minute).
I certainly recognized the song, but it took me a minute to place her voice.

"Into The Wild" was well done. Beautifully photographed, especially at certain points where they are really trying to demonstrate the love of life and nature and the experience that Alex was basking in.
Go see it!
As for "I'm Not There"...oh, I phucked that one up!
I must confess, I fell asleep.
It wasn't boring, but I felt like I didn't know enough of the Bob Dylan back-story to really understand some of what was going on.
I know his music but I haven't really even read a brief bio of the man and his life. I felt that would have helped me through the movie alot...like reading the Playbill while waiting for the opera to start. Yes, you can lose yourself in the art and the music and all these other things happening on stage or screen, but if you don't know the story, it all really just doesn't mean much at all. It didn't hold my interest...and Zzzzz
I couldn't believe it! And, I will try, again, to see this.
In my defense, I went early to buy tix for the late showing, then went next door and had a big fat glass of red wine from my favorite cutie Brazilian bartender, and was so mellowed out that I dozed off about 40 minutes into the film.
It was artfully done, at times, like a documentary, at other times, mere entertainment, but I didn't really "get" the story of it.
I felt like I needed a narrator to fill in the gaps of the parts I didn't understand. I was too tired, too mellowed out, and too lazy to think about it that much that nite. Bad on me.
Mad respect for Bob Dylan and his music, but I just didn't do the homework to really appreciate this movie that nite. (I didn't think that would be an issue).
I will go see it again...and definitely recommend it to serious Dylan fans.

In an interview (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article6043331.ece) Bob Dylan talked about what “intrigued” him about Obama after reading “Dreams From My Father”:
He’s got an interesting background. He’s like a fictional character, but he’s real. First off, his mother was a Kansas girl. Never lived in Kansas though, but with deep roots. You know, like Kansas bloody Kansas. John Brown the insurrectionist. Jesse James and Quantrill. Bushwhackers, Guerillas. Wizard of Oz Kansas. I think Barack has Jefferson Davis back there in his ancestry someplace. And then his father. An African intellectual. Bantu, Masai, Griot type heritage - cattle raiders, lion killers. I mean it’s just so incongruous that these two people would meet and fall in love. You kind of get past that though. And then you’re into his story. Like an odyssey except in reverse.
