For all you tapers out there. Here are some quick FAQ’s so that when you get to the show you can get hooked up.
<LI class=Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in">Yes G. Love and Special Sauce allows audio taping
<LI class=Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in">No. You cannot videotape the shows. This is not cool so please don’t bring your video cameras into the show.
<LI class=Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in">Chris D is your contact. He is the GLaSS sound guy…any kick downs (and you know what he means) will help get what you want.
<LI class=Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in">Come to the soundboard no later than 30min before show time (i.e. after the opening band goes off stage) and he will patch you in
<LI class=Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in">Bring all your own cables.
<LI class=Msonormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in">1st person to arrive will get an RCA feed everyone after that will daisy chain off of the initial feed.</LI>
These are the basics. We ask that if you are a taper that you please post on this site so that anyone looking for a certain show will know whom to contact.

Hi,
I'm new to this and would like to know if anyone can give me tips on how to get permission? I don't really want to email them because I am embarassed at how little that I know.
I have read some stuff on the internet and will probably buy a minidisc recorder sort of thing but maybe someone here can give me better ideas.
Also I see that they don't allow videotaping but they must allow it now because I see G Love all over youtube.
Thank you!
Nikki

Hi,

Hi Nikki, welcome aboard.
I'm not sure I understand your question.
If you want to audio record, you don't need permission, as per the policy Jason layed out in the thread you found.
Do you want permission to video record?
I have never have a problem. I have to admit I was unaware of the no video policy (oops), but I'd like to think that it's okay with them considering Garrett knows that I record and we've had conversations about it.
(Also that policy was dated in 2003 and alot has changed since then.)
It's kind of normal in this day and age to see tons of cameras up front at shows. Ya can't help but feel a bit like a paparazzi though, and I always try to go for a different angle than others, and use some discretion. That's often easier said than done, however.
The only time I've ever had a problem was when the venue had a no cameras policy, and even then, it's pretty easy to find a way around that.
I don't know much about audio recording.
But if you can clarify your question, I'm sure someone here must know more than me and will help ya out.

Hello again! Oh wow I sure feel silly
I'm confused too I guess. I see that the policy says that they allow taping but I mean dont' you still need permission? How do you get your recorder in without anyone asking you questions? Don't you need some sort of pass to show them at the door or a letter from them saying its ok?
How will you know who the Chris sound guy is? You can't just show up and say I'm here to tape please, right? What if I go to the wrong person? I just don't want to get thrown out if I ask the wrong person about taping, you know.
Also I really need some technical tips on how to do this like what to buy or whatever. I think I can probably just go to Radio Shack and they'd sell me everything I need but I dont want to get ripped off and buy half the store if I don't need all that.
Hope that is a better question. Thank you veyr much!

alot of taping depends on the venue. some places require a tapers ticket, others not so much. i'm not a huge source of info, but there are different ways to tape. one is a sound board feed, that's the case where chris d would come in handy. there are also ways that involve mics in the audience. all have their pros and cons. i think it mostly depends on the type of sound you want to get. (i.e, is the crowd noise to you or do they make it a richer performance with their reactions.) i would have to suggest going to a website like the traders den (http://www.thetradersden.org/), etree (http://bt.etree.org/), or archive (http://www.archive.org/index.php) and talking to people there. good luck with it all.

Heres my thoughts, I have been taping for years.
Don't use a mini disc if you avoid it! They are unpredictable and really are garbage. You want to get your hands on a Sony DAT.
Don't go to radio shack to get what you are looking for unless its for tapes or cables. If you can avoid using rca cables, do so. In my bag I have about 5 different connections, (ie male female adapters 1/4 inch xlr etc) because every sound board is different and is usually provided by the venue.
If they stop you on the way in, just bullshit them, say you work on the street team for the band, or I say I work for a live music web site.
Always tip the sound guy a spliff. I have found 99% of sound guys are the biggest asses in the business (other than managers) Chris D seems very cool, but others are not cool at all. They are usually stressed before the show and don't have time for you; - or, they don't really want you to record in case it sounds like shit and gets back to the band. The band will blame the sound guy for the bad sound. (not the venue nor their performance of course)
Since I video tape shows, I get the permission before hand and then my angle is that "I am working as well, doing video, so please help me plug in" After the sound guy says "what!! I wasn't notified about this, why didn't you come during sound check..." I then say, "heres a spliff, now plug the fucking thing in". That usually works, when it doesn't, I just use my mic, smoke the spliff myself, and when the band sees the video and hears the shitty sound, it usually gets back to the sound guy anyway.
Finally, always bring a microphone with you in case the sound guy wants to be a dick. Countless times i have been blue balled when trying to record. Even with g, I have had to use my mic many times. Again nothing against Chris, he is the 1% that is actually cool, but the very last thing on his mind 20 minutes before G. hits the stage is your recording the show.
I would suggest anyone who wants to tape to do it right and buy a DAT, either new or off Ebay.
Feel free to ask me anything, and if you want to see some finished work, check out my videos. Most are soundboard, some are not and you just have to do the best you can.
Maybe sometime G will give me the green light to do a video for him. These days with youtube, theres so many really terrible, amateurish clips. I guess they are from camera phones or a handheld camera in movie mode, I don't know. The video policy should be reviewed. All I know is that if a thing is worth doing, its worth doing right. Especially these ultra competitive days, And to see how its done my way, check the link out.
