I was wondering what the thoughts were re what Maggie Gyllenhaal had to say about America & 9/11?
From what i've been reading there have been some pretty extreme responses for and against

Good thread. The hoopla over it isa joke.To me it was simply an obvious observation about 9/11.What she saidwas, that theUnited States was"responsible in some way" for the attacks because it has done some "reprehensible things" in and throughout the world, fuelinganti-American sentiment to the point of terrorism.
Really not an earth-shattering opinion, inasmuch as OBL has written a "manifesto" against us expressly stating the same thing.
But of course, people herejust can't wait to be grossly offendedby the comments of another (so they can shout how OUTRAGEOUS andREPREHENSIBLE the speaker is). Not surprisingly . . . the NYC firefighters and conservative bloggers were allgrossly offended and outraged by the comments.
She's now been told that she's anti-American and she should just act and "shut up". Oh, yeah, she's received hate mail and threats to the point that they have had to shut down her fan website. Nice. Only in America, the proud birthplace, and one-time protector of free speech. Ah, those were the good ol' days, weren't they?

Peace, y'all
P.S.: And . . . why is it so GD difficult for someto understand that criticism does not equal hate? If you criticize your spouse or SO,nobody would suggest that you hate that person. But if you criticizeany aspect of the USA, legions of small-minded people willexpend inordinate energylabeling you as anti-American? Again WAFJ!Edited by: ragmop

well put my friend. a true patriot is someone not afraid to criticize their government. i love my country but it upsets me to no end that we are hated so much throughout world. i mean, countries who have ties or allegiances to us are being subjected to terrorism just because they are allies. WTF?

ragmop, I was hoping to hear what your two cents were re this topic, nicely said. I did a little looking about the web yesterday re her comments andfound one of the fan website's for her. I came across this 'enlightened' display of patriotism.
Original Thread comment - “Congratulations to this smart lady who has the guts to use her position to try and open the eyes of the American people. Actions will alway's have consequence's, I am not saying and I believe neither was she, that the people who died in 9/11 got what they deserved. They were innocent victims of an inhuman attack, however, the actions of the American government in the past allowed that America as a country would be open to retaliation.
Response No1 - “you freaking clueless pig--guess what-instead of giving us the benefit of all your political wisdom, why not move to Iran--you can cover your face--and get treated like a dog. LEAVE
Response No 2 -“20 towelheaded fanatics from the lowest life countries on the planet kill 3000 of our people in search of paradise with 70 virgins and somehow its OUR fault?
Get the berka--go to Iran with the pig.
Hmmm...
And yes sadly countries that have allied themselves like Australia have been attacked also. I was suprised actually when I came to the US for a visit not long after the Bali bombings, (in case you don't know about them) two Australia tourist club's in Bali - The Sari club and Paddy's bar were bombed. 202 people were killed-- most of them young Australians -- and more than 300 injured, only a few American's Ispoke to re Bali had any idea that it had happened and also didn't really seem to care. It made me both mad and sad cause the attacks were a big push for Australia to join G.W.'s colition of the willing.
AnywayI have had my little rant now.

It's a'holes like those cited above that give my country such a bad rep in the world. Aggressive, egocentric, uniformed, boisterous, arrogant, intolerant, racist, and sometimes just plain ignorant.
I say, "What an embarassment."(To whichsomered-white-and-blue "American" will likelyrespond, "If you hate this country so much, why don't you leave")Edited by: ragmop

yeah, what the fuck ever! those people are clueless. move to iran? what kind of bullshit is that? most americans would loathe our government if we knew what went on outside our borders to protect our interests. or perhaps most wouldn't give two shits and that's pretty scary. Edited by: pfawnk

Yeah, pfawnk! What scares me is that the rest of the world thinks these assholes speak for the rest of us. No wonder we are seen as the "uglyAmericans" everywhere we go in the world.

We don't all see you as 'ugly American's' the majority of American's that I have met both in the US & when they have travelled to Oz have been really nice people, in fact they often behave better than some Aussie's!!
It is unfortunately that American's are depicted in such a bad light due to the 'ignorance and arrogance' of a few; but, all you guy's can do is keep up the good work being the enlightened, articulate, cool people ya'll seem to be and each person you meet convert's another to the American's cause!!
Anyway I'm gettin all deep again, I have a tendancy to waffle on certain subject's!
Peace, Luv and Mungbean's baby!
