are you going to learn accoustic or electric?
figure that out then i suggest you head to a music store and talk to them, they should be able to let you know the good from the not so good, what you can afford [they can cost a pretty penny], then you can chose something that fits you and is comfortable to play..
i don't play myself but that's what i've learned from friends and family that do play. if i'm talking out my ass, someone plz correct me lol smileys/smiley17.gif

What part of town are you in?
I could teach you how to play
and i have extra guitars, too
it's pretty easy
i'll teach you the basics
then you can develop your own style
from there~playing music has definetly
saved my life on more than one occasion

i don't know about that. from my experience they can be sort of deusch bags. they don't give a shit about you learning how to play, just how they can make the best sale. buy cheap, but not too cheap. too cheap and you'll end up hating your intrument and never picking it up because it sucks. in guitars, and pretty much all instruments, you get what you pay for. stay around the 2-350 price range. if you stick with, then find you a nicer one. you can find a really cheap martin or a decent washburn. alvarez's are nice and cheap. you can get a fairly nice one for under 400. are there any local music stores in your area, ie non-commercialized music chains? but somewhere that maybe sells new and used cds? sometimes they have used guitars, and they're way more friendly and helpful. in my opinion a first time buyer should stay away from places like sam ash and guitar center. if you do goto those places, however, find a friend who knows a thing or two to help fend off the dirty sales vultures.smileys/smiley2.gif
hope that helps a little.
