This may be a bit hi-tech for many (including me) but this guy
documents how some cds that come from Sony, where you have to install a
program to play it on your computer, installs a massive attempt on copy
potection and hides in the core of Windows. If you're considering
buying one of this cds beware that Windows almost for sure will run
slower and get (more) unstable

(btw, I stole this from another forum)

I had this problem for the first time recently trying to burn the new My Morning Jacket disc. Sounded horrible, with skips and bumps throughout. Don't know if it's Sony though.

I've never had this problem myself, but I guess it only apply to the
cds where you have to install a program to play it on your computer.
I've never seen one, but it seems like they do excist.

BMG was also the company who payed tons of money for copy protection
based on the Windows autorun function. When a student pointed out that
the protection could be broken by pressing down the shift-key, which is
the button for standard disable autorun in Windos, they threatened him
with lawsuits smileys/smiley1.gif

Yeah those CDs suck. When you get the software to burn it on your PC, there is also the option to rip the tracks to your hard drive. If you do that then burn to a CD (which I think you can only do once or twice), you can rip those tracks to your PC and burn to a CD an unlimited amount of times, or a portable media device like an iPod. I think I've had to do that with Velvet Revolver and the new Foo Fighters, and now it sounds like the new Trey.

A little update.

1) A virus which uses this has already popped up, sirkulating in a mail with the subject "Photo Approval".

2) A temporary list of cds with this kind of protection:

</span>
• Trey Anastasio - Shine

• Celine Dion - On ne Change Pas

• Neil Diamond - 12 Songs

• Our Lady Peace - Healthy in Paranoid
Times

• Chris Botti - To Love Again

• Van Zant - Get Right
with the Man

• Switchfoot - Nothing is Sound

• The Coral - The
Invisible Invasion

• Acceptance - Phantoms

• Susie Suh - Susie
Suh

• Amerie - Touch

• Life of Agony - Broken Valley

• Horace Silver Quintet - Silver's Blue

• Gerry Mulligan - Jeru

• Dexter Gordon - Manhattan Symphonie

• The Bad Plus - Suspicious
Activity

• The Dead 60s - The Dead 60s

• Dion - The Essential
Dion

• Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten

• Ricky Martin - Life

So no Ricky Martin or Celine Dion for me this Christmas.smileys/smiley19.gifsmileys/smiley19.gifsmileys/smiley19.gif

3) Sony is beeing sued in California for tampering with peoples computers. Serves them right!

[Donald the Falcon lands at Gambler's side at the blackjack table]

Gambler: I don't know if I'd join this table, stranger. I've busted nine times in a row.

Blackjack Dealer: Blackjack!

Gambler: Ohhhh! Looks like you're my lucky charm, Falcon! What do you say we go hit the town, huh? I'm up for anything!

Donald the Falcon: [ screech ]

Gambler: What? Oh, let me rephrase that: Anything except Celine Dion.
