I always knew I didn't like birds. (except seagulls)
let's start stockpiling the anti-viral medication, who knows how to purchase things from the BLACK market?

Man , you ppl really have to stop believing everything the american medias are force feeding you....

All the countrys who can afford it have already taken all the necessary measures to prevent a worldwide epidemy , especially the over-paranoid USA , and believe me , you are not in any danger.....let me repeat that so the message really gets across...YOU ARE NOT IN DANGER.that goes for terrorist pressure as well...you've got more chance of getting struck by lightening!

hahahahahaha totally. i haven't done any precautions against illnesses
in YEARS and i rarely get sick! same with my boys. i rarely trust
anything from our medical association anymore. if anyone in the house
gets sick, i turn to home remedies and they work great, if not better.

Ushuaia...i see u dont live in u.s....i was less than 15 miles from the terrorist attack in washington d.c. I dont worry about terrorism to much, but its always on the mind. If you could tell me where u got your research from then i wont be worried about the flu.And sauce.baby...dont u worry those household remidys WONT HELP u against the bird flu. I just love how this flu started in china 4 years ago and has crosses this world all the way to the u.s. now. But yall have nothing to worry about. I have a little 4 year old who could die from this flu in 1 day. So i guess this Bird flu is just paranoia.

I'm backing Ushuaia on this one. Does anybody remember SARS? 774 deaths
worldwide from a disease originating in a country with a population of
1.3 billion. Mad cow disease? Who would've believed that cattle could
get sick by eating remains from the slaughter (i.e. cannibalism)? Bird
flu is the new loud.

Not to say that our media wasn't going crazy over this news, believe me
they did, but to quote the great Dan Piraro: They need your fear!

I have to agree with ushuaia, sorry hon. The media does a great job at one thing, keeping the majority population in fear. At times I fall in that category, we all do.I do worry about things for the simple fact that our government is always pissing off someone.

I like sauce baby do notuse many meds over the counter or prescribed, hell I work for a pediatrician were sick kids roam all day long and we don't get sick much around here either. There is always a level of caution we shouldtake in our daily lives in general, but I am not going to freak about this, not yet.Edited by: ramble on rose

Education is not paranoia.
I have faith in the World Health Organization and the position they take on most issues. They don't pretend to predict the timing or severity of the next pandemic, but they do analyze precipitating and contributing factors to gain a better understanding

November 2005 (WHO website)

- WHO global influenza preparedness plan

Experts at WHO and elsewhere believe that the world is now closer to another influenza pandemic than at any time since 1968, when the last of the previous century's three pandemics occurred. WHO uses a series of six phases of pandemic alert as a system for informing the world of the seriousness of the threat and of the need to launch progressively more intense preparedness activities.

The designation of phases, including decisions on when to move from one phase to another, is made by the Director-General of WHO.

Each phase of alert coincides with a series of recommended activities to be undertaken by WHO, the international community, governments, and industry. Changes from one phase to another are triggered by several factors, which include the epidemiological behaviour of the disease and the characteristics of circulating viruses.

The world is presently in phase 3: a new influenza virus subtype is causing disease in humans, but is not yet spreading efficiently and sustainably among humans.

I'm agreeing with Terje...SARS was the perfect example...yes people died, but so do plenty who suffer from other diseases.

I live life by the mantra "if you die you die, and there's nothing you can do about it" so I'm not afraid of the bird flu...and um, yeah, the media is full of shit so much of the time...can never believe everything you hear or see...

i understand u worrying about your kid and all , but let me tell you that i have lived in the states , even if only for two years , and i've also lived in about 6 other countries , and let me tell tou that there are places in the world where terrorist attacks are daily , and other places where you couldn't even imagine the horror of every day life.

the bird flu should be the least of your worrys for your kid , and the way things are going on earth , he'll be lucky if the states still exist when he turns fifty.

Should i understand by this that you are one of the experts who conducted the research?

i've got a bit of a scientifik backround and studied the question myself , i know what i'm talking about.

yeah relax, no point stressing about what you have no control over- but make sure you know the facts and what your responsibilities are to be prepared (perhaps nothing besides being informed)

how many people have a supply of 4 litres of water/day, enough for at least 3-4 days- canned goods, batteries, candles, medicine you may need, an out of area contact, a plan.

I'm all for the conspiracy theories against government, I like to blame hysteria on them as much as the next guy, but if some disaster/pandemic/alien takeover hits
and you were made aware of the possible dangers, yet chose to do nothing to make yourself safer, then...I don't know...you're more fucked.

Did I say I was an expert from WHO?
I said I had faith in their stance on issues.
From what I read, they are watching and studying the virus, they aren't saying it's the imminent end of the world, so what the fuck are you being so snarky for?

(ps, sorry i'm being a snark now, but I just got out of bed and haven't finished my prerequisite to daily life coffee yet- my apology for swearing at 7:15 am my time)Edited by: swaytosway

(and nice to meet you, where else have you lived, and what brought you to France now, if you don't mind me asking)

My advice would be;

First, travel to The Home Depot and purchase 5 peices of standard plywood, 12 ft x 20 ft, nails (if you don't have them), as well as 16,500 lbs. of Quickcrete concrete (roughly 4 full pallets).Along with that, anotherpeice of plywood6 inches thick, 15 ft. x 20 ft. Also, pick up some concrete screws, 4 stainless steel hinges, some rope, and an18 ft. long 4x4. You will also have to go to your local United Rentals, or other for a Backhoe and 500 lb. capacity paddle mixer.

Next, dig hole in backyard usingthe backhoe 12 ft. deep x 15 ft. wide x 20ft. long, a rectangle/square shape with a right angled floor (you will have to do the corners by hand shovel). Mix concrete in the paddle mixer, cast the floor first (6 inches thick) let sit for 16 hours. Next, build up wooden forms (using the standard plywood) to allow for 6 inch thick walls around the entire rectangle/square shelter, then pour the walls (again allowing 16 hours to set up before removing the plywood forms).

Third, fasten the hinges to the top of the concrete wall in 4 3 ft. increments, and also to the peice of 6 inch thick plywood. Also, fasten the rope to the plywood on the opposite end of the hinges (using either a nail, or tie to an eyelet screw).

Finally, fill this new shelter with matresses, canned goods, bottled water, candles, stereo, George Foreman grill, extension cords running from house...etc. Insert family into the shelter. Get in shelter. Pull the rope to begin to close the roof, catch the roof with the 18 ft. 4x4, and slowly ease it down to cover the new shelter. Tie the rope to the floor or a bedfor a secure lock and...

Enjoy! Bird flu problem solved!

ushuia we would love to catch a glance of your research.

Mr. Cleanface the wheels in mr. ramble's brain are turning and he has busted out the measuring tape to see how big of a shelter we can fit in the yard. You are always welcome.smileys/smiley2.gif

maybe I should just bury my 17ft camping trailer in the backyard. Except I'd probably die from all the digging, before the birdie flu ever got me.

What is/are the source(s)? Economicdisparity and/or frustration or justkids runnin' wild?

sorry if this answer is a bit late , but i'd go with kids just going wild:there is an economic disparity , but if u chek out another post i made somewhere , you'll see why i think that every kid can make things work out for himself if he has the will to .

the social situation really isn't that bad here , and the so-called "dangerous suburbs" are reallynot that dangerous at all....it's not like if these kids had guns...just a bit a petrol and matches.

The meida continues to stir hysteria
No need to be worryin ya

The bird flu is true
But my God man what else is new?

Mad cow, SARS, bird flu....nothing compares to what the
human race has done to this planet and the people on it.

Life's too short to worry about things we can't control!
