Mr. Cleanface

Myself and my boy KA were drinkin' and arguin' (as usual) about the greatest guitarists ever. My thoughts; top 3 baby:
1. Clapton
2. Hendrix
3. Stevie Ray Vaughn
Anastasio(Phish)and Frusciante(RHCP) a close third.
Opinions and feedback will win me money!!!!
Please help my great cause! Myself. Thank you.

Sorry, I'm a little blind. I think it's pretty stupid though how you can say that Johnson was horrible! he was the first one to record the 12 bar blues! that is huge! Blind blake or Django reinhardt could take clapton any day, and he'll admit to it. I think Layla was a great album with great guitar playing, but Django can do it better than clapton can, even with three less fingers. Hands sown
Mr. Cleanface

Yeah "horrible" is a little strong. I am sober now, sorry about that. But RJ is not in anyone's league. Django is incredible, but "Clapton is God."

Holy cow....Nobody mentioned these guys????
Steve Howe (Yes), John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu) Joe Satriani, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Master of the 64th note!!), Steve Vai, Paco De Lucia, David Gilmoure (Pink Floyd)????? Hell.. Even Jerry Garcia deserves some props here... ;)

I have always liked Eric Johnson. He's really good. I wonder if there is a greatest guitarist?
sassy
02-27-2004, 06:48 PM
Finally, a real question.....I wonder that too.....everybody seems to have a slightly different style than everybody else....maybe what I really want to know is what is the greatest style??
justinreid
02-27-2004, 07:54 PM
Would'nt that just come back to everyone's personal preference? We all know what we like. I do know that every name that has been mentioned is great in their own right. Who could really make a case for the greatest guitarist being anybody. I bet the greatest guitarist is someone that none of us have ever heard ofsmileys/smiley16.gif
DaveRS575
02-27-2004, 08:02 PM
I dunno.. I think if he or she exists, we'd have heard ofthem by now! :)
Good point though, "The best" is a pretty subjective description.. How about "The fastest and most accurate" I'd vote for Steve Morse or John McLaughlin personally in that subject. "The most emotion"? Maybe David Gilmoure or Steve Howe, the most rockin? Maybe Angus? :)
How about Most soul?
Most Funky?
Best Blues player?
etc... This could be fun....
Mr. Cleanface
02-27-2004, 08:15 PM
Soul - Santana
Funky - Frusciante
Blues - Clapton....Stevie Ray
justinreid
02-27-2004, 08:16 PM
My vote for most rockin might be Randy Rhoads??? He rocked pretty good.....Blues guitarist......I'm not real great in this department but Albert King is pretty damn good???? Funk.....ahhhh, whoever plays guitar in the Parliment Funkadelic is probably pretty high up there????? You know who is a really great guitar player is Kyle Gass? The guy who isn't Jack Black in Tenacious Dsmileys/smiley16.gif

Phish is pretty tight...and I love trey...he is great guitarist willing to push the envelope on new techniques and everything...But I am not a huge phish fan...I see the talent...I realize they are amazing just cant become this huge fan...dunno why.....just cant...but they have the utmost respect from my end...and I will always to some extent stick up for them...but trey is great...I dont know if any y'all caught any of those dave matthews and friends shows...but Trey was off the hook...and he really brought out a different side to dave...overall trey deserves credit...

by fruity lyrics I mean the "look at me, time goes past" bs thats in every NEW song.(round room) but your right who cares about that.
the mistakes Im talking about are his guitar parts. Ive yet to see a flawless coil,mikes,slave... hes messed up many divided skies, weekapaugs, things that Ive seen him nail with fire years ago.plus new stuff....Ive seen alot after the hiatus too,so Im not just talking from tapes either
Im not happy about it, but thats how it is.

It is very hard to pick the greatest guitarist of all time. I think that there are a few on a par with one another, but if someone put a gun to my head and said chooseI would have to say Robert Johnson. He was an inspiration to all other guitarists. When you listen to him on some songs it sounds like a band of guitars playing, but it's just one, being played by Robert Johnson!!! Close behind are Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards amd Jimmy Page. There are a few others, but that would have to be an essay!!!!!

Bacon. You are pumping this page full of bullsh*t. You're rolling of a bunch of guitarists who are irrelevant in the world of rock 'n' roll. You accuse us of the same old, same old, like saying Hendrix, Clapton etc are amoungst the the greatest guitarists ever, but it's simple; they f**king are!!!! You ask how many artists have been influenced by the likes of the Stones or the Beatles or the Yardbirds then I think you will find it difficult to find those who haven't. Your list I think will feature very lowly. You are one who tries not to conform and base your own opinion, which is great, but grow up man, you are just being arguementative. Whether you like it or not Robert Johnson was a f**king genius as was Hendrix. Your guitarists aren't doing anything new. Open your eyes and stop acting like a f**king 3 year old and lets hope your guitar playing doesn't ever have to cross the Atlantic to Britain. Peace out!!

Right...ok, you wanna talk about white guys that think their black? How about your guy's idol over here, Mr. G Love...thats about as "wigger" as it gets, he isn't smooth. Teddy P. or Otis Redding are smooth, but not him. It isn't my fault that you've never taken an English class above the third grade level. How you equate proper grammer with hip hop, is beyond me. I don't know about you, but I that sh*t is as much a joke as your boy Dutton.
geg10115
03-19-2004, 05:58 PM
Ok whatever third grade is. Here in England we use a different class system. But i presume third grade is quite young. Guess you like trying to wind up little kids. Yeah? But no. I am in my final year at university so you can't do your paedophile sh*t with me. Mate I am a hip hop fan as well as a rock 'n' roll fan. Hip hop is an expression of peoples struggle agianst f**king oppresion that sh*tty corrupt racist twats from America and Britain enforce on them, just like blues was. We do agree on one thing though; Otis Redding was cool. Somewhere along the way you have forgotton what music is about. Real shame really, cuz you sound quite intelligent. Perhaps you will wake up one day and take your blindfold off. Don't waste your time argueing with us, try and prove us wrong.

Also, thanks to DaveRS575 for mentioning the virtuosos Satriani and Vai, cause if you're talking the BEST they just can do anything, literally, its a freak show.
But if you are saying the greatest guitarst ever, you have to look at the whole package. So yes, Robert Johnson is up there, Hendrix and Slow Hand Clapton too.
When hendrix was asked what it felt like being the best guitarist in the world he said, "I dont know, ask Phil Keagy"

I see there is a bit of tension in this discussion, but thats cool. It's rock 'n' roll. Wasn't rock music an expression for youths to have a go at society and to say what they like?! Aheated discussion hurts no-one.People get way too offended too easily now a days and I think that people in this discussion who aren't happy with the aggravation need to chill out (contradiction in terms!!!) Now come on Yanks where has all your rebellion gone? Changing the story does anyone rate Big Bill Broonzey and Blind boy Fuller. Also I don't think Keith Richards is getting enough love or George Harrison. Peace

Ican't believe that in 4 pages of replies, only 1 (!) person mentioned JIMMY PAGE and that was in a list of about 5 people. Seriously, the man was incredible, and if you want to see for yourself, check out the zep's new dvd. I'm obviously too young to have seen them in person, but the things he could could do with a guitar were incredible. Now Hendrix may have him on pure talent and energy on electric guitar but Page's mastering of the instrument (see Since I've Been Loving You) is out of this world. I came out of the womb worshiping Clapton and his journey from the Yardbirds, Cream, Derek and the Dominos, and on to a great solo career, but once I got into the zep in the 9th grade, my ideas were forever changed. Really, I think there are about 10 guitarists who could shift around and challenge for the top spot in all honesty, but Jimmy needed his due and I couldn't see him get ignored. Peace
P.S. If anyone's been to a G.L.a.S.S. show lately, what John Lee Hooker CD do they play before and after they come on? I was just at their show at Axis in Boston and all I could get out of people was that it might be a live CD. PLEASE, let me know if you have any idea which CD it is. Thanks!

1) John Mayer is absolutly brilliant, went to a recent show of his in sydney and he played the guitar behind his back, on his neck, on his lap, is there anywhere with this phenomenal guitar play can't play his guitar?!?!? NOT only did he do it all those ways he did it superbly!
