saw these guys the first night of bonnaroo and wow! they have a great sound that is a mix of so many things; hip hop, reggae, latin, funk, and more. the vocals really grabbed me, and they were great live. the crowd went crazy when they started out a song with the opening from circle of life. yes, the song from the lion king. dead on with the lyrics, then they picked the beat up and made everyone dance their ass off.
check out their web site www.thecatempire.com. (http://thecatempire.com/)

It's going to be a great Summer: G. Love & Special Sauce next Saturday and the Cat Empire to look forward to in August!!

i'm so sad they're not coming near me. somehow i just can't find a way to close my store and then make it to washington dc. i'd only have to make it through 3 other states. :(

YEAH!!! show's this thursday! i haven't been this excited for a show in a while. i've already started to drive the people at work crazy with it:D
will i ever shut up about this band? short answer-no.
hey angi, you should try to catch them at summerfest on the 5th of july (you are going to that right?)
angischy
06-26-2007, 05:18 AM
Oh, I just saw that and thought of you! I'm marking them in my schedule.
I'll definitely be at Summerfest, as my FAVORITE local musician, Willy Porter (http://www.willyporter.com), is playing that day!!! Conveniently, right about the time that The Cat Empire will be finishing. Bob Weir & Ratdog, as well as Umphrey's McGee and Keller Williams, all on the same day at conflicting times.
I think I'll opt for Umphrey's McGee this time around. And definitely Mr Porter.
Fans of folk/acoustic/guitar wizardry and husky warm voices should check him out, especially live.
Tori Amos once said this about him, after getting to know him when he opened for her on tour...
“Willy plays rhythms that make me want to crawl inside his guitar and sleep there forever”
Speaking of not shutting up about a band, I'll shut up about Willy Porter now!
On with The Cat Empire thread...
tinkerlion
06-26-2007, 05:21 AM
i'll have to check out willy porter.
umphrey's is the right choice if you ask me (of course you didn't, but that's not going to stop me.)

a bit lazy, but gets the review in the right place
the show was fantastic. it was hot and sweaty, everyone (almost) was dancing and just diggin the music. they played three new songs i think. we were right up front for most of it until the wine ran through me and i had to pee. we ended the night at the back of the venue which was a nice opporunity to dance with my husband. we went with our friends and their two daughters. it's nice to have an event where everyone had a blast. eric has been talking up the show as well.
it was a little disappointing to see the roxy on the empty side, but refreshing that the show was still very high energy. the opening band was also very good, the soul of john black (http://www.thesoulofjohnblack.com/) the front man john bingham played with fishbone for eight years.

Wow! The Cat Empire! Thanks for the band tip, Tink. I had a WONDERFUL time seeing them at Summerfest tonite!
But you knew I was gonna say that...right, Tink? ;)
Loved all that trumpet, and what a fun show to dance along to the music! (even on bleachers!)
I missed Umphrey's 'cause it was too crowded, so I went and made an attempt to meet back up with my brother at the Bob Weir & Ratdog show. Hahaha, what a mistake! It was packed, too, and I was looking for a 6ft tall guy wearing tie-dye...who looked just like every other dude there!
The music and the crowd were fun, but it was starting to drizzle, so I cut out of there early and beat the crowd. It was a great nite though, and I'm glad I got to see some fun music, both new and old loves!
I'll be posting vids on Saturday. They won't be amazingly wonderful, but if you wanna check em out, here's the link to my channel (http://www.youtube.com/angischy)again.

Tink, by chance, have you checked out Jackson Jackson (http://www.myspace.com/jacksonjacksonmusic), the side project of Harry Angus?
There's a review of it here (http://www.popmatters.com/pm/music/reviews/32667/jackson-jackson-the-fire-is-on-the-bird/) that suggests, no, more like requests, The Cat Empire would be a better band if it would make its music sound more like this album and made some of the same socio-political commentary.

at least through the magic of the internet i've been able to find and hear the album, and i must say i love it. it has several songs that are tradition and on track for the cat empire, but also there was alot of growth. right now i have to say voodoo cowboy is my current favorite.

from their myspace page
We are very proud to announce the US release of our latest record, So Many Nights, which has just been released in the USA.
The album has already gone platinum in Australia. We recorded it in Malibu, CA and in Melbourne after our USA tour last fall, and we really think the album marks a high point for the band, both in terms of performance and songwriting.
So Many Nights refers to the songs. They're little vignettes from our travels, stories that got etched out in the back of a tour bus over the years. We were keen to step beyond our regular party thing and were all ready to make something crafted, more musically solid. There are still some solid party moments though, so old-school fans won't be disappointed!
Check out the new Empire mediaplayer (http://www.velour.org/thecatempire/) to preview songs and video clips for "So Many Nights" and "No Longer There".
You can also embed the player in your Facebook or MySpace page to spread the word – click on "Get Your Own" and copy the code. You can also order it through Amazon.com.
We'll be following up soon with tour info, ringtones and contests.
Thanks for your support!

well ain't that the cat's meow!
I got a ticket to go friday in vancouver- I live 90 minutes or so away.
I'm sure we could have a few drinks. How long are you going to come down for? What are your plans?
I might be camping before or after, not really sure yet- but I'm on holidays then- have to see as it gets a bit closer.

we're flying into seattle on the 15th and driving up. staying till the 19th, as we have tickets to both shows. plan to see as much of the area as we can before the shows and on the 17th. any recommendations on where to stay, i haven't booked a hotel yet, but planning to do so soon. this will actually be my first trip to canada, so i'm pretty excited! total icing on the cake will be seeing the lovely stricken in seattle before we fly back home. don't know if this trip can get much better!!

My apology on taking so long to reply- but my plans are a bit in flux, so it's hard to make additional plans. I may have to go to the ocean on a family camping trip 15-17- which entirely screws up going on the 16th. There is a chance I can get them to change the dates of the trip, if there is any other time that works. Otherwise maybe I can go to the show on the 18th, but then my sister couldn't go with me, I don't think. And I was going to offer you could come out this way a day or so, as my domestic life has dissolved such that it is me and the kids in a big house- lots of room. But now I know not on the dates or the trip, or what show I can go to, if any. So, I'll have to wait a bit, regroup, recalibrate, retwizzle, bedazzle, shemazzle, all that stuff.
I'll let you know as I know what I will know, that is to say, what I shall learn, glean.
Oh what the hell does she mean?

well let me know what you can when you can. we booked the shreaton wall center, as i wanted to be able to walk back from the shows. we're still up in the air as to the time we're not at the shows, so even if you can't make it to one (but i really hope you can!) then we might could come out that way cause i can't pass up the chance to actually meet you!
