Ok- so I have finished a few more books...
Brief History of the Dead-Kevin Brockmeir- ok, pretty good read, about a plague that kills off the worlds population and when people die they go to another realm rather like this one, where they remain as long as someone who is still alive remembers them...it was entertaining and a fast read
The Little Friend- Donna Tartt- VERY GOOD! I really enjoyed this a great deal...about a 12 year old living in rural Mississippi who decides to find and kill her brothers murder, he died when she was a baby...very entertaining- very ballsy, smart kid.
Marley & Me- ok I was hesitant to read this...but it was really good- and had me totally balling my eyes out last night. It's about a man and his Yellow Lab. Starts in puppyhood, and goes til he is 13...yep- it gets a little sappy maybe at the end- but it was worth the read. I have a choc. lab- so someone told me to read it- any dog lovers would enjoy it.
Starting:
Neighbors- Thomas Berger- has anyone read this one before??
I am also waiting on Oh The Glory of it All- Sean Wilsey
Any other new suggestions??

i've heard about marley & me from several people, i'll have to check it out.
right now i'm about to finish the 11th book in the sword of truth series by terry goodkind. it's sci-fi. takes a guy who grows up in the woods and has him find out that he actually has magic and he goes into other sections of the world that were blocked by barriers. it's kinda hard ot explain it all, but a good read. except for one book in the middle, it was crappy, but the next tow books redeemed it.
after that i'll start first meetings in the enderverse. more sci-fi. it's by orson scott card and it's 3 short stories, one of the being the original version of ender's game, one of the best sci-fi stories of all time (to me at least.)

I've justread "he's just not that into you" by Greg Behrendt & Liz Tuccillo. A friend gave it to me ... I guess he wanted to make a point smileys/smiley2.gif
It's a FUN read, but don't take it too seriously!! They make a few good points, but turn the world very "black & white"!!
Am looking forward to some more time to read ..... soon!!!

Oh I have heard of that book before, He's just not that in to you- I'll have to look for it...
I haven't read very much sci- fi in the past, but another friend of mine just gave me a couple of books to check out- one of them had something to do with Pillars? That was in the title at any rate. I'll have to check out the series you mentioned Tink.

there is a book in this series called the pillars of creation, but it's book seven. if they did you need to go back to book one called wizard's first rule.
i didn't really get into sci-fi until my husband go tme reading it. it's nice to read a book that's totally an escape sometimes. you don't really think about things like plausiblity when you're dealing with magic or space and such.

oh yeah- I don't know which one she gave me- I'll have to check that out- thanks for the tip- it would suck to start reading and realize I was missing some info!
she also had told me about a series of books that deal with some children who were born after some genetic experiments- some had wings- things like that and they escape from the place there are keeping them- I don't remember what else she said happened- but it sounded interesting enough.
I am thinking I would enjoy a more fantasy vein of reading- I have a tendency to read rather serious books- and it doesn't always lead to that feeling of escape...I really love and enjoy the Harry Potter series- so maybe some sci-fi would be good for me now!

that does sound interesting. you'll have to let me know what the name of it is.
i was the same way with reading heavier material. sometimes i just need a more light hearted or escapest read (like now for sure!) a few good books to ease into sci-fi (at least from my experience,) are ender's game by orson scott card. it's not too far fetched. if you enjoy it i would then suggest ender's shadow by osc. it tells the same story, but from a different characters' pov (bean.) i wasn't sure if i would like it, but i've read it about 5 times. there are about 3 more books following each character.
also george rr martin has a series that is the songs of ice and fire series. alot of sci-fi fans will say that the wheel of time by robert jordan is the ultimate sci-fi series, but the just haven't read martin's books. it's a very engaging and gripping read. you really get attached to some characters and it has some great twists.
one more series that's light hearted, but in a different vein, is the stephanie plum series by janet evanovich. one for the money is the first book in the series and twelve sharp just came out. it's about a bumbling bounty hunter from new jersey. i seriously laugh out loud when reading these books.

What is Naked Lunch about?

08-02-2006, 03:20 PM
it's kind of hard to explain. I guess drug addiction, life and death. It's written in an almost hallucinatory stream of consciousness style. Here's the first page
I can feel the heat closing in, feel them out there
Â*Â*making their moves, setting up their devil doll stool
Â*Â*pigeons, crooning over my spoon and dropperI throw
Â*Â*away at Washington Square Station, vaulta turnstile
Â*Â*and two flights down the iron stairs, catch an uptown
Â*Â*A train... Young, good looking, crew cut, Ivy League,
Â*Â*advertising exec type fruit holds the door back for me.
Â*Â*I am evidently his idea of a character. You know the
Â*Â*type comes on with bartenders and cab drivers, talking
Â*Â*about right hooks and the Dodgers, call the counterman
Â*Â*in Nedick's by his first name. A real asshole. And right
Â*Â*on time this narcotics dick in a white trench coat (im-
Â*Â*agine tailing somebody in a white trench coat -- trying
Â*Â*to pass as a fag I guess) hit the platform. I can hear the
Â*Â*way he would say it holding my outfit in his left hand,
Â*Â*right hand on his piece: "I think you dropped some-
Â*Â*thing, fella"

I finished My Sisters Kepper last night- and was crying all over the place! That is the 2nd book this week that ended with me sobbing on the couch!
On to Neighbors- it supposed to be FUNNY! About a suburban dad that loses his mind when a drug dealer moves in next door and ruins his perfect little world. So no crying.
I did really enjoy My Sisters Keeper- it was well written and made you think- just wasn't prepared for the ending. Knew it couldn't end well- but it was quite a surprising twist!

i was crying my eyes out at the end of that one. i love how she was able to jump to everyone's persepective. i'd be thinking someone was acting kinda bitchy of whatever, and then it'd flip to their perspective and you'd really get what was causing them to act the way the did. the ending was a shock, but i loved it.

I really liked the way she made each chapter a different person too- I
also liked that the writing style changed-the ending really took me by
surprise- it was so well done that you couldn't see it coming. I
hate when I am reading a book and you just know where it's going...I
was told to move onto the Pact next- you think or is there one you
liked more?
tinkerlion

oh, the pact is good. one of my favorites. also i really loved mearcy and keeping faith. the issues those two delt with are so interesting to me (euthinasia and religious stigmata.) but i haven't read any of her books that i didn't like.

if you've read and enjoyed the style of hitchhiker's then you should pick this up.
the two main characters so far are an angel and a demon who have been on earth since the begining of time. armageddon is about to happen, and they've decided that they'd prefer earth to stick around. they need to kill the anitchrist, but where i'm at they have just discovered that they don't know where the anitchrist is.

any one ever read the incarnations of immortality by piers anthouny? it's actually seven books. it's an inventive series that interconnect or each book could stand on its own. it takes death, time, fate, war, nature, the devil, and god turns them into jobs. each book takes one of the positions and tells how a character ends up in the position. it had them settling into the role, and in some cases retiring it to someone else. fascinating read. my favorites are books five, six, and seven.

i'm definately going to have to read her other books b/c i thought this was fast paced lol. it is starting to slow down a bit, but it's a great read.
he's been released from the hospital and is at his brother's house. he seems to be making more sense now - before he had forgotten his wife had died (and it was only 8 days after the funeral), was calling his daughter by a different name, trying to sneak out of the hospital and not making much sense. Now he remembers and jokes about when his friends tricked him and took him to the hospital (they told him they were going to a party lol), knows and recognizes family, and is making sense. they're still trying to locate the primary cancer, b/c his type of tumors are usually secondary, but aren't having much luck (maybe a good thing?). thanks, for asking, Tink.
