View Full Version : cuckoo for kyoto

Kyoto is starting to drive me round the bend. I try to keep up…dig dig dig. At first I thought -this seems like a great initiative, long overdue. Now with all the politicians in the ring, environmentalists spewing hysteria? or hard line facts?, and scientists climbing the ropes…I feel knocked-out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol

Above is a little refresher on the Kyoto protocol if you think this might be a new type of Kashi cereal.

So Canada was in wholeheartedly under our Liberal (previous) prime minister. Our new Conservative PM, Mr. Harper, is doing an about face and not keeping up the commitments made. Personally, I think he has a thing for Bush and wants to be his girlfriend, maybe get asked to the prom. This government says the previous one dragged its butt to do anything and then signed up for unattainable goals. The last government says that the current government does not want to upset its support base which is in Alberta, no surprise they’d be the energy/oil superstars with the all the $.

The US hasn’t joined, nor Australia- of the who’s who world list. From what I gather, Bush doesn’t want to do anything to infringe upon the magnate that is the United States economy. Or could it be that he is the master from which Canada’s PM has been taking lessons. Can we say back pocket of the energy oil companies? 50 million in donations to get him puppeted in the white house, that's what I read.

And of course, all this info, I gather it from here and there, reputable, possibly disreputable sources, how do I know? My head is spinning.

I do know North America leads the way in per capita greenhouse gas emissions. A penchant for fossil fuels to run these great lands. A truck and car for every man, isn’t that an amendment to the Constitution? Europe by far shames us, taking action even before Kyoto’s inception, moving towards more green forms of energy and the infrastructure thats needed to support it. Denmark and Britain have met their Kyoto goals thus far. There also seems to be an increasing amount of back peddling from more than just our fair countries as of late.

Then I read a letter that had apparently been penned by 60 world renowned scientists, basically saying ‘don’t believe the hype.’
************************************************** **********************"While the confident pronouncements of scientifically unqualified environmental groups may provide for sensational headlines, they are no basis for mature policy formulation. The study of global climate change is, as you have said, an "emerging science," one that is perhaps the most complex ever tackled. It may be many years yet before we properly understand the Earth's climate system. Nevertheless, significant advances have been made since the protocol was created, many of which are taking us away from a concern about increasing greenhouse gases. If, back in the mid-1990s, we knew what we know today about climate, Kyoto would almost certainly not exist, because we would have concluded it was not necessary."

"'Climate change is real' is a meaningless phrase used repeatedly by activists to convince the public that a climate catastrophe is looming and humanity is the cause. Neither of these fears is justified. Global climate changes all the time due to natural causes and the human impact still remains impossible to distinguish from this natural 'noise.' The new Canadian government's commitment to reducing air, land and water pollution is commendable, but allocating funds to 'stopping climate change' would be irrational. We need to continue intensive research into the real causes of climate change and help our most vulnerable citizens adapt to whatever nature throws at us next."
************************************************** ********

Who the fuck knows huh? I play with my Rubik’s cube for a while, I get one side, sometimes 2, you know when I go for the third the whole thing screws right up.

Any opinions? Clarity?

(Intersting article, I think)

IMO, that letter is partially right. natural causes DO change the climate all the time and "stopping the climate change" is a bit irrational and far-fetched, HOWEVER, there is NOTHING wrong with wanting to lessen the impact we as humans have on it.

we don't own the planet, the planet owns us. the LEAST we can do is RESPECT IT by TAKING CARE OF IT.
it's sad that more and more people would rather be lazy and rich than active and healthy..

i have to agree with sauce baby, i know there is so much we aren't certain about in regards to our impact on the environment, but that doesn't mean we have to keep producing these wastes that have been shown to be harmful to humans.

it's so confusing when you read up on these thigns because it seems like there's a "specialist" who will support any point. well, any point that someone with the money wants to be published.

I was thinking exactly the same thing sauce when reading sways post. We ALL know carbon emissions are not good. We ALL know weather is cyclical. I don't think anyone is saying we, humans, are having no impact on global warming. Even if there is some overhype, at what point do we serious about cleaning up our act? So it's cheaper to throw money at studies and stall action, than it is to throw it at solutions?

Anyone see Wall E? Talk about a messed up planet and inactive out of touch people. There is even a rubik's cube in it sway!

whoa Man! that chick is harsh, she needs ta mellow Out.

thanks for the update tink.

not looking so good, is it?

Canada turned into a bigAss on this one. With the election of stephen harper in 2006, suddenly we weren't playing that game anymore. With the continuation of the stupid TarSand deal, obviously we don't want to play. The extraction and refinement of this oil emits more greenhouse gases than all the passenger cars in canada.

we need to invest, value and research alternative energy and Fast.
solar, tidal, wind, geothermal-
we're like the crack heads walking the street at the break of dawn, heads down, checking out every piece of potential fix in the gutter and in the cracks. we need to get off the junk and raise our faces to the sun, feel the wind on our cheeks- and not be afraid of the change we need.

We saw it yesterday, I know I'm behind the times. All five of us candy, popcorn, lemonade for under $30.

It's so very true tink about the 'specialists'. Has anyone ever had jury duty or spent time in a courtroom? Well we are the jury keep an open mind 'til you hear all of the evidence from both side. The trick here is coming together and having our voices heard.
