what food has a strong tie to your childhood?

for me breakfast in general because we always had a huge breakfast at my grandmother's house. specifically it would have to be biscuits and peach preserves. my grandmother did alot of canning, and i would demolish jars of her peach preserves.

sorry, i went to harry's again this week and had some more great food finds, one of them being biscuits. also made french toast for breakfast. yummy! of course, there were so not so good food finds, like the crackers made of flax seeds. really nasty.

For me and my family it's Lasagna. The manner and ingredients used to create the sauce is shared with all the women of the family, generations! Every year our family tries to get together for THanksgiving, it's like a reunion. A big spread, we eat all day long. Old and young Italian women cooking in the kitchen, the men drinking and watching football, the kids playing games, good times. When we do thanksgiving we throw in a huge pan of the family lasagna every year, along with antipasto and bread and pastries someone has gone to get or brought down from New York. there was a year when my Aunt let it be known none of the older women were making lasagna, too time consuming. We would not stand for it, it was like we were being robbed of our childhood. So, someone had to step up, it was me! I made it and fed it to the family for the first time in complete fear. Anyone else I make it for thinks it's fantastic, but this time I was serving it to people who knew what it should taste like. You know what, I rocked them!!!! So the tradition never ended and we still have that Lasagna before turkey every year baby.

I love flax seeds. I keep a bag of ground up ones in the fridge and put about a spoonful or 2 a day on something, usually cereal. It's like an intestinal exfoliant (not a pretty picture), but makes you pretty on the inside. That's not related to childhood, just another thing I picked up along the way.

yeah, i assumed the crackers would be made of ground up flax seeds. not the case. when i bit into the cracker they just burst in my mouth and i felt like i needed to chew, but couldn't make it happen. i'm going to try them with hummus to see if that works better.

i've just been on a serach for crackers and bagels. those are my two cravings that i still need to satisfy.

i love french toast as a special breakfast. when i was little my mom would ask what we wanted for breakfast and dinner on our birthdays. I always asked for it and chocolate moose for dessert (don't recall what i would ask to have for dinner). mmmm

and then there's my all time favorite cold lithuanian soup - buttermilk, beets, and cucumbers. it sounds gross i know, but it doesn't taste like any of the above sound. all of my friends who've tried it love it.

my husband's dad is from Italy and we have it at their house on Thanksgiving too. I was never a pasta person before him, but love it all now. That's great that it turned out well the first time you made it for the family. :)

my husband never liked pasta dishes untill I started cooking them for him. Glad to hear we are not the only ones with lasagna love on thanksgiving. Thanks I was pretty proud when it turned out good, the mister heard about it for a week after.

my mom would make me dropped eggs on toast...basically a sunnyside up egg on toast..and she would cut it up for me so each piece if toast had a little egg on it...sometimes when I am not feeling so great- she still makes it for me...I try to make it for myself- but it is just not the same...mac an cheese is another one...my grandmother made fantastic mac and cheese...but still loved the blue box too...
