So I stop at the liquor store after work to pick up a 26 of vodka and a 4 pack of girlie lime drinks, which are adequate by the way, but not outstanding. As I'm stepping up the sidewalk, a man is leaning his bike against the wall and walks in just ahead of me. He looks early 20's, black as night (like a Kenyan or Ethiopian distance runner on TV, low ratio of such nationalities in this area, hence tv being my reference), wearing old hand me down looking clothes, wearing a backpack that is rattling returnable empties, unassuming, and quiet. He holds the door for me, I say, 'thank you'. I watch him go to the back corner to return his empties. I imagine he's using the money to go buy a small bit of food or other essential He doesn't really look the rock bottom substance abuser part,in my opinion, all speculation of course. So now that I've created a scenario for this man, I begin to feel rather ashamed and sheepish at my $30 liquor purchase. I mean if this guy needed food, you know I'd put back my 4 pack and give him $10. But therein lies the quandry...giving people things and not inadvertantly displacing respect.
As it turns out, he goes over to where the single beers are sold (what a busybody nosey nose I am , huh?). He's looking at them, imports, small brewery ales, the like. I saw him pick up about 3 to inspect, then put them back down before I was done paying and left. Maybe he was trying to steal one, that is always a possibility as well.
The whole time I was paying, I was mulling over how I could give this guy $10 so he could upgrade to a 6 pack...and I just couldn't sort it out, which made me a little sad. I thought, I could just go up and give him the money and offer my straight up rational. sharing some happy. And now, maybe these are just more of my assumptions, but I thought, likely he'd be embarassed, thinking I thought he was a charity case, or thought he was a drunk in need of assistance, or maybe he'd think I was a psycho ho that had a penchant for black 'love'.
Not to say, that this is a put down to him. Pride is pretty amazing thing at times, despite being an obstacle at others.
In Dharma Bums by Kerouac, there was a part where he was sharing some food and wine with an old train riding guy. He commented on how the exchange was not like 'charity' and it was a great thing because they both understood it. I can't remember exactly (my clarity), I think it was to do with some Buddhist principle. It was an equality and oneness and love- that had nothing to do with who was doing the giving or the receiving.
That be my ramble.

tinkerlion
10-14-2006, 03:53 AM
that's a great ramble.

I only read it twice but it wernt quiet clear to me.

Did you just get down with the kick downs?

You know There's NO city like generocity.

There's no nation like a donation.

I need a miracle.

So give the bum a dime or one of your girly lime drinks.

Whats budda got to do with it?

sway2sway
10-14-2006, 04:21 AM
well now it ain't clear to me...
(we must be in different stratospheres, or somethin')
1. I don't know what a kick down is, unless it's kickin' someone down.
2. I wouldn't have called him a bum, maybe a very poor person
3. Buddha, I don't think he had anything to do with it, but I was wishing for a
principle/sentiment I can't seem to find.
4. I understand the donation/genrosity deal, but it still doesn't mean it always comes out how you wish and it doesn't always mean that it is received well.

redqueendancer
10-14-2006, 05:44 AM
I agree. Truely I'm guessing it wasn't taken well. I'm the fool.
I'm sorry. I feel like I must have offended you In some way.

Have you seen the comercial about the people that almost give?
At least those people have a kind thought. Instead of a condemning glare.

Its sucks being poor and homeless or having to flop around from house to house.
I'd much rather be the endowed yuppie who could buy you a drink but wont cause its not a cheeseburger.

sway2sway
10-14-2006, 06:06 AM
no, no, no, not offended
I guess I didn't make my point clear enough either...
the guy didn't look homeless and he didn't look like he was asking for anything.
so then it's just me worrying about how it is perceived to try and give someone something and how it might make them feel. I'd wish it would just make them happy, but I know there have been times when I've done it, and the receiving end, I think, feels judged. so I was weighing, is the gift of a 6 pack, worth the possible misinterpration and how that might make the person feel. maybe I'm projecting how I wonder if I might feel in such a situation. I don't know, everyone's different. it was as much of a ramble about my perceptions and attitudes, as those of others. no offense, I just try to work these things out in my mind and grow. thanks for giving me your feedback

I be the big ass spider
lurking in your bed.
fluff up the pillow
and now you see,
I'm all up in your head.

I be the squishy spot

maybe it's sweeter,

I be the pebble

maybe I'm not what you think.

I get that, but should you base your actions on utopian principles when the world you are living in isn't? Isn't that not being realistic to what the actual outcome may be? Just like you cannot always replicate scientific experiments outside of controlled laboratory conditions, so you cannot always make everything right just because your intentions were good. (certainly not a bad place to start though)
If I had just given that guy $10 to get some beer because my intention was to make him happy, does that automatically make him happy. And if it isn't about emotions from either party, then I'm not gettin with it. I don't expect gratification, a big fat pat on the back...but I don't want to make someone's day worse. What if in reality, he felt I was judging him as a poor person charity case loser and then this subsequently made him feel bad?

round and round, where she stops,no one knows

Aren't grits oatmeal? If so, that sounds disgusting; but, I have the feeling it is another one of those things I've been wrong about my whole life, which are now slowly being revealed.

tinkerlion
10-18-2006, 03:43 PM
corn actually (of course if you ask rednecks they might also tell you it stand for girls raised in the south:rolleyes: .) it's a very good thing for me also, because i can't eat oatmeal (very hard to find oats that aren't cross contaminated with wheat.)

Grits is a type of maize porridge and a food common in the Southern United States, and southern Manchuria (where it is called gezi in Mandarin) consisting of coarsely ground corn, traditionally by a stone mill. The results are passed through screens, with the finer part being corn meal, and the coarser being grits. Many communities in the Southern U.S. had a gristmill until the mid-20th century, with families bringing their own corn to be ground, and the miller retaining a portion of the corn for his fee. Grits aficionados still prefer stone ground grits, although modern commercial milling companies prefer other methods.

ok, my turn to ask a question, what is polenta?

sway2sway
10-18-2006, 03:54 PM
it's more of an italian deal, finer ground cornmeal, fried in a pan, topped with parmesan, mozzarella, tomato sauce, whatever (tastes like shit, probably just mine)

Rensul
10-18-2006, 03:59 PM
I tried to do polenta too- it was awful- I was thinking I must have done something wrong...

Cornbread is one of my favorites too...I have a recipe that you make a bean / meat mixture (kinda taco-ish) and then you bake it in cornbread- it is sooo good. I have tried it with both ground turkey and lean hamburger- both very good. I think it's called a tamale pie:D

I change it (the topic) to jalapeno peppers. I love them. I just had a jalapeno cheddar bun with jalapeno & sundried tomato havarti cheese.
Did you know that jalapenos are not as hot as you might remember? They have been selectively bred to reduce their heat. (said Cliff Claven) The reason, the dolla bill, less heat means they appeal to a great consumer group.

yep, i cut the bananas lenght-wise into quarters then slice it up into the batter and "fold" them in. i like to add 1-2tbls of vanilla extract and a heafty sprinkling of sugar, too. i also added some coconut milk [almost 1/2 a cup] yesterday and they were delish. i kind of wished i had some chopped walnuts to add, too, but ah well.

is that like cheese product or edible oil product? cause those aren't good unless you are specifically looking for them. Like cheez whiz is good if you want cheez whiz, but not if you wanted cheddar cheese. Similarly cool whip has it's place, but not if you need whipped cream.

sway2sway

yeah some people don't do (heretics, I say). Seriously, a lot of people do alternate halloween activities with kids. Every year there are stories in the news for the week after of kids who got sick that ate candy, or kids that died that ate candy. The next week, they usually retract their premature coorelations, but ya know candy is candy, risk is risk, and shit is shit. I just hate the whole $ thing of all it all. Anytihng fun is jumped on and gang raped until you can no longer see the girl she was, just a pool of dolla bills.

I don't think there is anything you can do to stop it- unfortunately...I would hide it from Ryan too!

My Aunt died yesterday of Lung Cancer. She was only diagnosed in August. I hadn't been close to her since i was a little girl- due to my parents divorce. My dad pretty much told his family to keep away from us- which sucked and was very hurtful. I am not sure I realized how much it hurt until now- very strange I guess.

Anyway- she was a really funny, great person and she has an AMAZING laugh. When I was 10-11ish she and my uncle had a baby boy- Robert. I used to go up weekends and during the summer and stay with them helping her with the baby. She was so good to me- who want to put up with an annoying little girl? she did -and it is still one of my happiest memories.

They came to my wedding last year and it was probably the first time I had seen them in atleast 10 years. In their card she gave me a picture of me holding baby Robert on their couch.

I don't where any of this leaves me other than really sad. I am trying to take comforrt in that she will not suffer any further, but I am sad for my uncle and cousin- they have a tough road ahead of them- I am pretty sure she was their glue.:(

so anyway- if you all would be so kind as to keep them in your thoughts- I'd much appreciate it

wow, what a quick diagnosis and death; sorry you are going through this. did you have a chance to see your aunt before her death and to tell her that those memories were some of your happiest from childhood? make sure you tell your uncle and counsin what you told us - how she touched your life, etc... it helps to hear stuff like that.

unfortunately, the last time i did see her was at my wedding- I have nice pictures from the wedding with her in them...I am going to make a card (i do some scrapbooking and there are some pretty neat things you can do). I suspect she knew how much I enjoyed my time with them b/c she put that picture of me with my cousin in the wedding card- still I wish I had TOLD her. I thought I would have more time to get there- they had just given her a new time line of 6 months to a year 2 weeks ago...

I am actually feeling better since I posted and shared with you guys...amazing how that works huh?? Thanks to all of you!!

check out what I got. I am so excited. I haven't had a piano since I lived with my parents way back when. I'm not sure how great this one is gonna be, it was a second hand store find, but anyway, it's got all the keys and definately needs tuning. I'm gonna look for some funky music to start practicing on. goodbye are the days of sonata in G and fur elise.

what kind of kick ass car is that in your garage?

sway2sway
10-27-2006, 11:46 PM
that'd be a late 60's parisienne convertible. a friend was given it when his dad died, this guy lives in the city and had no where to store it, so we kept it in our garage for him cause we didn't think it'd be right for him to sell it. After a while he just signed the papers over, so we could insure it in the summer to cruise around. Still, it seems more like a co-ownership thing, symbiosis of sorts. It can drive around town a bit, but really it needs a fair bit of electrical work. It's sweet though.

lietuvaite
10-27-2006, 11:52 PM
that is a sweet car. are there any old car shows/festivals by you in the summer where you could show it off? lots of that shit by me; nearly every weekend actually, as i'm in the motor city. it's always fun to walk around and see the cool cars

sway2sway

some, it's not really in show off condition right now. Plus, it's not all original, I think that matters, like we wouldn't be alble to get collector plates. It has a different motor for one, I don't know what else. I don't really know much about cars, I just know I like em old and shiny.

today warrented a visit to petsmart, seeing as bacon destroyed one of her favorite toys (although it is the first toy she's destroyed, so we're doing well.) we got a newer version of the toy, bigger since she has also gotten bigger. just a few hours of play and it's been christened the doggie dildo.

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/6449/doggiedildoun7.jpg

the kitties also got a new toy. one that can stay out of bacon's reach (at least until the cat's go crazy with it and knock it on the floor.) it's a pad that has kitty pot on the inside. zuke and tink have been fighting each other over whose turn it is to play with it. this is going to provide hours of entertainment for eric and i. this is tink before she started truly freaking out (those pictures were too blurry:( .)

ha ha, that doggie dildo looks a little big for lil' ol' bacon. I know it's too early for this shit, but when I saw it there, I thought to myself (Just for a very small second), "why don't people get cool looking fuzzy ones in an array of textiles and hues?" Well, a nanosecond later, the picture in my brain flipped over to this soggy, slimy, fluid thread crusted, once fluffy dildo. Mind you, I never entertained such folly that the thing could be soft, through and through. That's an oxymoron, isn't it?

Hope you're feeling better Tink. maybe you need a little magic carpet ride, like kitty.

I think we should have a human hedonist store, it'd be something like a petstore, maybe? All the best food & snacks, human cat nip (whatever that may be), human toys of various predilections. Pets got it all under one roof.

I'm wearing denim today at work, it's a Friday deal. Make a donation, wears the jeans, buuuutt, hold up, you also have to wear a sticker on your shirt that says 'I'm wearing denim for charity'.
Nice. Am I being petty? maybe, but I feel like I'm playing monopoly and if I want to use my get out of jail free card, then I have to lick it and make sure it sticks to my forehead for the rest of the game.
maybe I should make a sticker of my own, 'I'm dressing like this so that I can have a job.'

tinkerlion
11-03-2006, 10:22 PM

sway2sway
11-03-2006, 10:28 PM
yeah, I guess that's the crux of it, the sticker- but not just the sticker.
it's the conditional nature of it all, I don't like imposed conditions. why can't you just give $ and wear the jeans. why do you have to wear the sticker?
I'll tell you why, my friends. Because business is all about appearances, it is a disclaimer to the effect that I am not just a sloppy employee representing their company. I am being sloppy for charity. This is not the status quo that they endorse and they don't want that point to be forgotten. SO I WEAR A STICKER!!!!

my question this morning would be would it be with or without the squeaker in it? (there's a small high pitched one in the nose that's very annoying this morning and a lower pitched one near the ass.)

sway2sway
11-06-2006, 04:41 PM
well, I'd opt for no squeaker. too distracting for one, second I have a built in squeaker, I'm not gonna tell you which end it's at though. a girl's gotta keep some things secret, or just make shit up to disguise the real truth.
bacon though, I bet he quite likes the squeak, probably makes him feel like he's dominating the lil' apparatus.
(Fur shui- a specialty area of Feng Shui, the art of arranging your furry pet and their furry dildo (or other such toy) in a way that is harmonious with the environment, inclusive of a capability for body fluids and fur shed during the acts to be quickly and easily wiped clean)

haven't had the extra money to get her fixed yet. luckily we haven't gone through a heat yet. liz wants to breed her with the in-laws cocker. i don't really want to deal with the puppies, finding homes for all of them and such. she might wear me down though.

Rensul
11-06-2006, 06:55 PM
this is our 2nd heat. I do want to breed her, with my inlaws chocolate...but not this time- I can't deal with it- and they say to wait until the female is closer to 2...

the vet kinda made me nervous on Sat- she said to make my decision soon b/c the longer you wait the more likely it becomes that the dog will get uterine cancer

tinkerlion
11-06-2006, 07:01 PM

yeah, bacon discovered how to grab the toilet paper and run with it today (which is surprising she hasn't done it earlier seeing as she stays in the bathroom when we're not home.) it's just been one thing after another. she's quieted down, so it's time to let her out.

Rensul
11-06-2006, 08:04 PM
that is so funny! Nellie about killed me at the vet sat..she was SO excited to be there with new people and other doggies..the people in the waiting room were looking at me with those- you poor thing eyes...she was dragging me around everywhere...I finally got her to a spot away from everyone so she could calm down...but it was rough.

Two weeks ago she ate my coffee table leg...guess she was bored...now she has to go back to bed while we aren't home...she is now also so afraid of the basement-she won't go willingly passed it- which is very bad- b/c that is the way to get in the backyard. I now have to make sure the door to the basement is closed, put the leash on her in the kitchen, open the outside door and screen door so she will begin to move my way...it's getting very weird! I'm gonna have to call the dog whisperer soon...I bought his book this weekend...maybe I'll learn something...

I do love her though...

tinkerlion

I hope we don't go there...the vet said that labs don't typically calm down til they are 5- if they ever calm down:eek: I have been considering doggie daycare- she needs more stimulation during the day- but of course $$$'s the issue-and I guess it seems a bit silly..

I think I was tricked...my inlaws lab is the most laid back dog I have ever met...and I met him when he was 3...but my girl is a freak at the moment.

tinkerlion
11-06-2006, 08:15 PM

Rensul
11-06-2006, 08:23 PM
it is funny how that works...my husband and mom both think I have actually contributed to my dog's hyperactivity...which I will admit to a teeny tiny bit...I do like her to be happy to see me- and I tend to encourage her then...which may have extended to when she sees other people too- but that is all I admit to!!! Well maybe I am too easy on her as well...she is my baby afterall:rolleyes:

when she is tired she is very cuddly..and sweet- that is my favorite time...my cat Lizzie was a fickle little bitch...which I loved...she had such an attitude. She gave me alot of it the last time I saw her at my moms...

tinkerlion
11-06-2006, 08:27 PM

Rensul
11-06-2006, 08:30 PM
we had a cocker spaniel who used to do that too...we had a rule- if you made her pee- you had to clean it up...in a sick way- that means she loves you best!!!

Oh- yes- she loves being with my mom- she is back to ruling the house- she is the queen once again! I grow fat cats for some reason- when we got Nellie she started to lose weight ( which was probably good health wise) from stress...now she's back to her fat ole self!

tinkerlion

CARTOON: G.I. Joe

How it affected us as adults: Actually, we’re pretty certain that our strategy for the Iraq War was conceived after a two day long G.I. Joe marathon in the Pentagon. They just implicitly trusted that the good guys were going to win, that firing off our guns would make the bad guys run for the caves and that giving everyone cute nicknames was somehow endearing. When things didn’t turn out the way they’d planned, the administration placed the blame on faulty intelligence, or in other words: “Knowing is half the battle, and we unfortunately didn’t know shit.

about 8:45 this morning i started to have some pains under my arm that wrapped around to the lower area of my shoulder blade. when they hadn't gotten better by 2 when i took lunch i called the nurse line (24 hour service where you can talk to a registered nurse and ask questions.) so after telling her my symptoms (the pain has migraited to more the center of my chest through to the back,) i've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow. hopefully it's just some stupid little thing.

i hope it's nothing serious and it's good that you're getting it checked out quickly. too bad you can't bum some of those pain meds off of mr. c

just some deep muscle distress, or something like that. got some pills to take to make it feel better.

half days will be nice- a perk at any rate...are you supposed to put heat / cold on it? Or just meds? Hope it all goes away soon

glad it's something that should go away soon. it's always good to be told you have to take it easy, so enjoy the 1/2 days while they last
