Such a good show. The best, I think, that I've seen so far. Anyone else there??

I post on the 311 board a lot, and I wrote a "review" for fans there to read.

It was as follows:

Event: G Love & Special Sauce

Venue: Headliners @ Banana Joe's, Columbia, SC

Quite possibly the best show I've ever seen. If not that, then I left the concert feeling better than any concert before. The show was almost 2.5 hours, a little less maybe.

Random Ratings & Explanations:

Venue: 10/10. 16+, which is cool for a lot of youngsters, yet I WAS THE YOUNGEST ONE THERE (20). I was the only one that had to walk around drinkless, with big black X's on my hands. It was small, with a decent sized floor and a big balcony up top. Not really "up top", more like 8 feet from the ground. Let's just say, not a bad seat in the house. Of course I was right in front of the 3 foot stage, no "barriers"/security like most big shows (just in case you don't know how G Love shows are). Parking was ample and free. No traffic going in/out.

Crowd: 9/10. Like I said, everyone was older. Everyone was slightly buzzed, but no "drunk fuc*s" like at 'rock' concerts. Very chill group. One hammered chick though, who went from insulting salsa dancing to almost passing out in about 10 minutes. And somehow she ended up sitting on the stage the whole time, on the very front edge, so I was probably just jealous, hence the crowd not receiving a perfect score. http://www.311.com/ubb/redface.gif

Set list: 6.5/10. Unfortunately, they don't mix up their set lists THAT much. You know what songs you'll always hear, and "rarities" are just that. It's cool though because they're pretty much a jam band, so you're always going to hear different things come solo time. Oh well. Maybe I just want to hear Free At Last and nothing else, but fear I never will. But they did play some new songs last night that were definitely cool. And the rip they did on 50 Cents In Da Club gets its own 10/10.

Jimmy Jazz's unusually giddy composure: If you've seen this guy before play, he's good. I mean, who even plays a stand up bass anymore these days? Not that he's never not good, but let's just say he never compares to Garrett when it comes to stage presence. But last night! He was so rocking out. He just looked excited, acted excited, played his all. It was entertaining.

The concluding section is much more than just a rating. I started getting into this band from downloads off the internet (thank you, HSJ), but it was after I saw them in concert a few times when I decided to get ink done on my arm displaying their name. Considering their 10+ years together making music and doing shows, (somewhat comparable to 311), their shows still are incredibly personal. It blows my mind with joy, it really does. No repeating one-liners (who does that?!), no same intros to songs... I mean Garrett goes from sitting to standing to sitting the whole night! (and he didn't sit much last night http://www.311.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) He talks to the crowd.. gives cheers with his beer to fellow beer drinkers in the crowd. Gives his own damn half-drank beers to audience members. All this sitting 3 feet in front of everyone. He gets up and dances, acknowledges every reaching hand in the crowd with his own.. (If you saw them with 311, it wasn't the same, only because it was a huge venue, and they were an opener) And they are so happy when they're playing. They absof**kinglutely love what they're doing, its plain as day, their energy from that alone is amazing. No other band that I've seen is like this, NO ONE. I was telling Chris last night, "You know, I am more of a rock music person (versus music G Love plays, although it surely is cool stuff), but its the way they carry themselves live that makes them my favorite band".

Hey.. I have no clue as to what new songs they played, I don't remember names.. smileys/smiley12.gifAnd yes houseman was there! They played Milk & Cereal though, that was a treat! I had never heard that before live. G played a new one called Booty Call during his solo set at the end.. and they saved Baby's Got Sauce and Cold Beverages until the very very end, which was cool too, but left everyone way too excited when it was over!

A first time GLASS concert goer's view:

What a good show. It was the first time I've seen GLASS and I was totally blown away. I've seen some pretty far out concerts before (including some great blues performers) but this one was just great. There was great energy on the small stage in the packed room.

By the way, I'm 18, so I was also black X-ed. And that salsa chick was annoying me too!

I was at the right end of the stage with four (count 'em 4, IV) of my lady friends. Two of em sat on the edge of the stage leanin against one of the main amps. So that was a treat.

It was a great set, if you ask me. They did every song that I really hoped to hear and some great others. Hey man! G did "the times they are a-changin'" in the accoustic part of the encore, which went on and on to my suprise... brilliant. That was a Godsend. Dyan is the man, I hope to see some more of that in the future. Unfortunately, i think the crowd was a litle tired, maybe too drunk for the accoustic folk classic. Short attention spans on that crowd, i guess. or maybe they were just didnt know what it was. but it was appreciated nonetheless. Great versions of "Friday Night," "Basketball" and "Blues Music." Those were the three that stuck out to me. Great guitar and harmonica.

During the concert I was trying to peg his sound, and all I could come up with was that he's a little Dylan, a little Jimi, a little John Lee Hooker, a little Marley, perhaps.

Anyway, that's my view at my first GLASS concert, but I'm going to the Philly show next week, and I'm expecting a lot, so pull out the stops G. Shock the world, man, burn your guitar, smash some amps, or just give them to me. Or you could just have me come up on stage and we can cut heads.

The song goes like this:

"To dance the La bamba you need a lil bit of grace. A lil bit of grace for me and for you so get on up, get up get up. I am yours. I'm not a sailor. I am the captain?"

Ahh, its all good. She was with her bf, doing lots ofSalsadancing before the show, during the opener.. when they started to play though she wasREALLY drunk. She ended up sitting right on the stage, bobbing in and out of conciousness...My worst fear was that she was going to hurl all over Mr Jimi Jazz and ruin his awesome night!Amazingly enough, she didn't! smileys/smiley17.gif
