View Full Version : G. Love Post - Song Writing

I've been down at my parent’s house and I definitely got the chance to catch up on some songwriting. I've been on the run so much this year that starting a song has been easy but finishing the song has been a problem. Therefore, I have easily 20-50 song ideas that are like eggs in a basket. Which ones will hatch into songs? Out of those songs that actually get written, how many will be recorded or performed live? It remains to be seen...

Right now I'm going through my book and my Blackberry (where I write a lot of lyrical ideas) when I have those couple of hours where I can be free and energized I pick up that old guitar and start hashing one out. If I'm getting off, then something good is happening, if I'm stuck in the muck, its time to move on and practice something I've already written or learn a cover. I just learned the Beatles "I Want You". This past week I tuned up a couple songs I had started, "Georgia Brown", "Sugar", "New Situation", "Mountain Hi Honey", and "Jenny" to name a few. Mark Boyce has also written an amazing ballad called "Pick It up Again" which I learned this week.

For the rest of the spring we will be continuing to add these new songs to our live show. Currently, we are playing "Wiggle Worm", "Pick Up The Phone" and "United Cab" (Houseman wrote that one) in the set. Because of the fact we have 8 records out, it’s harder and harder to get these new songs in the set. However, this spring and summer we will be all about catching a vibe on these new songs. We need to see which ones come off live and which songs don't. If a song can vibe on stage it’s a good indication if it should be on a record. Our mini tour in July will especially be dedicated to performing mostly unrecorded material.

I'm getting ready to record our 9th studio album this July and I have my sights set on the Grammy. I want to make the record of my career. I'm going to blow Lemonade and the Hustle out of the water. This record will be my rawest, funkiest, dirtiest record ever. I'm going to call this record "Down and Dirty". This record will also be a return to the G. Love and Special Sauce name on the release. There will be few outside guests too. This record will be the best and most representative hip-hop-blues record ever made. I plan to show the recording industry (especially Rolling Stone magazine) that I have and will continue to kick ass in the recording studio and the live circuit where thanks to nothing but FAN SUPPORT we continue to grow! We thank and truly appreciate you people.

On another front, I'm meeting up with Miles and Chris D at the Philadelphonic Studios to record the song "Baby I Like It" for the Slightly Stoopid record. We have performed this song a lot. Have you heard it? It’s dirty. We just played it in San Diego a couple weeks ago. Hopefully, it will make the release. I think SS is going to drop something hot again this summer. I've also heard a rumor that we will be on tour together this summer as well. That's it for now.
Who's winning the tournament - my guess- FLORIDA

Peace in the Middle East.

Hillary Clinton for president!

Great, in-depth post. Good luck. IMHO, rolling stone is mainly a mockery of music. But if you get rolling stone on the GLASS bandwagon, look out.

I am in awe of the continued passion and love flowing through these posts. It would be nice to see more real artists being recognized by the grammy's, one glass, one day. As for "rock mags", what the hell do they know anyway! Looking forward to a new album for glass as well as SS, and a tour. life is sweet. One Love.

I am simply sedated knowing that GLaSS will be coming out with a new-new record next year. Shit, I am still enjoying the previous records to the utmost, because I never-ever get sick of the GLaSS funk. Regarding the Rolling Stone, are these the same critics who are still "sitting their fat asses on the mutherfuckin shelf"? I mean, God Bless Rolling Stone for bringing me the Liberal & Environmental stories, but when it comes to the music, this magazine is watered down with Chris Daughtry, Puff Daddy, Axl Rose, Christina Agulara, Fall Out Boy, John Mayer, Meatloaf, etc. I am not trying to hate by any means, but just like commercialized MTV & the Corporate owned radio stations, there is no love for real music anymore. Now, I know why Jerry Garcia kept it underground. And I am sure G., Jimi Jazz, and Houseman have beef to pick with the music industry, especially Rolling Stone, but they should just jump start the revolution (of new age hippies) themselves, and keep the Corporations on that fuckin mantlepiece. With that said, hell yea, go President Hillary Clinton!!!!!!!! I would love to see Bill Clinton back on the White House for 8 years, and then have Barack Obama for 8 years after that. The Progressives need to look long term. . .16 years long term. These NeoCons are NOT for We The People, and I would love to hear a new ditty like "Parasite" regarding Corporate Corruption and how Fox News, is not fucking "news", but rather the MTV of news.

p.s. The revolution starts now, cancel your 600+ cable stations, we have GLaSS for our ears, what else do you need.

Maybe so Tink, but I'm gonna wait to watch it on DVD. TV rots your brain!!!
And it just suckers you into the mass consumerism of American corporate whoredom. Buy this, buy that. I have everything I need, but alot of extras.
I have a house full of crap that I don't need. Just wants and excess clutter.

I won't claim that GLaSS is the saving grace or anything, but it is nice to hear music being made for music's sake, not to appease the masses or the magazines. Or...is there going to be a change in the weather?
I like the idea that Garrett thinks he has something to prove to the industry and is going to put his heart into his work (as usual), but if they haven't sat up and took notice already, why would they choose to do so now?

Why even value what they think? Just make your record, take your money, and keep on keeping on. You have the love and support of many, and they can't take that away from you, ever.

Angischy,

I agree with you, however, I think there has to be some kind of personal motivation regarding Rolling Stone and the music industry. Kind of like the song Electric Mile, where these Corporations hold real artists down, unless they sellout their music. Some of the old articles I was reading in Rolling Stone about GLaSS, is very disrespectful (ie: comparing a GLaSS show, emotionally, to a Will Smith movie). Moreover, the ratings from Rolling Stone, on all the records, have not been stellar whatsoever.

As a musical genius, there has to be a self proclomation of redemption. Also, being backed by Rolling Stone, does not hurt financially. Even though Rolling Stone is whack, they still reach a lot of folk. But I say ^%$& it all too, even the hd tv sh!t, or the Wal-Mart & the Super Wal-Mart across the street.

btw, Angischy, you have awesome videos on youtube.
