Police in southern Taiwan were forced to shoot a crocodile after it bit off the arm of the zoo veterinarian treating it, an official said on Wednesday.
Dramatic television footage showed a police officer firing on the animal to wrest the severed limb from its jaws.
Chang Po-yu, 38, from Kaohsiung city's Shou Shan Zoo, was injecting the sick crocodile with anaesthetic when it attacked him.
He was said to be in a stable condition after being rushed to hospital for an emergency operation to reattach his arm, an local official said.
It was not immediately clear whether the operation would be successful.

Awesome! Yet scary, of course. Gators and crocs and bears, oh my! The animals, even the furry ones, aren't all our friends.
If only the guy had known that one possible solution was to bite back (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/2565827.stm), perhaps the croc's life would have been spared.
But seriously, don't they tranquilize them phuckers? I mean, hello, look at those teeth!

Isn't that what he was trying to do? I thought it had been shot with a dart before the vet went in. Someones dipping there hand in the pharamaceuticals, and the dose came up short.....

The update to the story today says that the vet's arm has been reattached with (relative) success. Crazy stuff.

Now, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLFH_I9ZFw8) is what I call reality TV.
Maybe I'm a tad bit too interested in this croc story, but to me, it's just an awesome story. Horrible that this happened, of course, but amazing that they got the arm back and reattached it and just wow!
Just super cool and what a story. So much more interesting than which celebrity just went to rehab or married Tom Cruise, or other such nonsense.
Speaking of more interesting and real media coverage and story-telling, is anyone a fan of NPR's (http://www.npr.org/about/) show This American Life (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/About.aspx)?
They just recently began a TV version on Showtime (http://www.sho.com/site/thisamericanlife/downloads.do?source=thislife). They've stayed quite true to the concept and it makes for some really quality television. Check it out.
