joel got his air force job for when he commissions [61S1B aka behavioral psychology scientist] and we have 5 bases to chose from for first assignment/training.
a research facility in mesa, az, edwards AFB in mojave, ca, wright-patterson AFB in dayton, oh, randolph AFB in san antonio, tx and brooks city-base in universal city, tx
we're not going to live on base, so i need to know all i can [the good, the bad and the fugly] about the cities and surrounding areas that the bases are in! i know i could google the cities and read about them, but that's all just biased "here's all our shiney spots, pay no attention to the dirt over there" information. i'm asking here because a lot of you live in, are from or frequently visit some of these areas and i'd like first-hand opinions.
danke folks

Dayton sucks, 30 min from my hometown. I think it was ranked in the Top 10 for murders several years back. Don't go there, especially if you have AZ and CA to choose from.

Mesa is a nice place, we used to live in Scottdale, which is pretty close. Scottsdale is kind of expensive, but the whole area is pretty sweet. The only area I would not reccomend would be some parts of the city of Phoenix. Otherwise my vote is for Az. It is full of great sights and it was so lovely to wake up and drive to work surrounded by thoses beautiful mountains. Plus if you want to see some change in the seasons, it is not to far of a drive to northern Az up 17. Sedona and flagstaff are great spots and you have the grand canyon too.

well, my cali choice is mojave.. yeah, don't really want to live somewhere where my gum will literally melt in my mouth [had that actually happen to a friend, and it was only may]. besides i like greenery, not greenish-brownery..
wright-patt's just outside of dayton, so i doubt we'll be living in the city itself, probably some north-eastern suburb.. a friend sent me a stats page for living expenses and average temps and stuff and it sounded nice.
mesa's the highest on our list because my dad lives up in sedona, so i've been to the phoenix area a number of times. i do love the red rock sunrises [when the smog isn't so heavy lmao] and being able to wear shorts for christmas will be a nice change. but, it's definitely the most expensive location.
thanks for the input, guys!

so when will you be moving sauce? have you picked the place yet?
doesn't your family live in washington? are you going to be sad to go? or are you ready for a change? do you know how often you will have to move?
the inquisition, huh?
I don't think you should go to ohio, I think it might stifle you.

well, it's still 12-18mo before we move. joel commissions in may '08 and it can be up to 6mo before we get orders. i think we're pretty set on mesa.. san ant might be moving into a second place, but we're not sure yet. we need to get our list in asap, tho.
we do live in washington and part of me is very sad to be leaving. i love this area. i've lived here my whole life [with the exception of the 6mo i lived in flagstaff arizona lol] and it just feels perfect for me. my big city is just the right size, not too big and not too small.
BUT, another part of me is getting excited to venture forth and discover life outside the great pacific northwest. this is a damn big country, and a damn big world and the air force has bases plastered all over it. the only annoying part is that orders generally only last 3 years, so just as we're really settling in and getting comfortable, we'll be uprooted again and sent somewhere else..
builds character, tho, right? lol

you'd like either mesa or san antonio, stace. i am pulling for mesa, only because i can't wait to see you capture the arizona desert with your lens.
