View Full Version : does anyone know?

this is a thread if you got a question and you hope someone will answer it.
seriously that's what it is.
Coincidence, I do have a question.
Does anyone know if there is a font for printing out something, that will make it look strikingly like it was tapped out on an old old typewriter?
Well, of course, I know there is, but more specifically how do I get it?
or if anyone has a very old typewriter that gathers dust, do you want to send it to me?
that's 2 questions.
feel free to answer or add your own.
and I make that a rule, if you're gonna ask something else, you've got to try and answer the previous, even if you don't know- which in no way means that someone else may not later answer, preferably another person with more expertise and knowledge would answer, than just the person who was guessing, or sorta remembering something that maybe could be.
ready go!
and remember if you make your questions bold they really pop and capture the reader's attention and/or imagination. Now have fun and feel fulfilled as your cup fills with the knowledge of our peers.
and don't forget....answer my fuckin' question.

Miss Shark, remember when you showed me the Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie by Bob Dylan. I still remember sitting amazed. I carried the words in my purse for a long time and now they are stapled and folded together in a square, by the telephone in the kitchen, where I put things I need to remember to do, or pay, or attend to- and I put it there not that it is an obligation, but so that I can find it when I need it. And I still do unfold it and read it every so often. Anyway, I just realized it was on itunes yesterday, so I downloaded it. It's rekindled my plan to have it written out in my dwelling. There's so many words I couldn't paint it small enough, so I thought it I could get the old typewriter, (best choice), or (2nd choice) even replicated on the computer. Then get it enlarged and made into like a 2 foot by 4 foot rectangle and framed. It'd be like a full length mirror on the wall, you could stand before it and think about your true reflection. Even if people only read a paragraph in passing, it could make them think.
To this day, i still can't comprehend the understanding I felt. Even if you're a bit odd, and pride yourself on not being of the cookie mold, you still want to know someone understands you.
Though, perhaps I am not so misunderstood as I feel, and therein is the problem, my perception. (HIGHway confessions)
anyway shark, I will always remember you for giving me that. the best gift

You're going to make me all weepy eyed.
A quick look at my fonts turns up one called American Typewriter

Old typewriters should be readily available too. Any time we got a call about one at the auction house, we ask if they had a boat that needed an anchor. They are not in high demand, although I have seen the keys used to make jewelry. I thought that was a fine idea.

well thanks for the answers shark.
I guess I was meaning a font that really looked like an old typewriter, you know with the little glitches, like the 'c' that comes out a bit low, the 'r' a little tilty, the keys you hit with your pinky a bit lighter-cause damn pinkies just ain't that strong. And then the effect as the ribbon gets old, lighter and lighter.
I should look around for an old typewriter. I've heard the hardest part and what you should make sure you have a supplier of first, is the ribbon. Ribbon be the arterys, to the keys red blood cells.
Have I told you lately, that I love you? I crooned that in my head, sounded soulful and honest, a little creamy too. thanks for the answer, do you have a question?

Even if you're a bit odd, and pride yourself on not being of the cookie mold, you still want to know someone understands you.
Though, perhaps I am not so misunderstood as I feel, and therein is the problem, my perception.
I relate. So much.
I don't think it happens very often, on a deeper level, that true feeling that actual understanding is going on between two people.
But when you feel it, you know it. Like, drop-jaw, comma, whoa.
When it happens, that deeper connection to someone or something, it is really something that gives me pause.
It makes me feel less alone in this world and sometimes maybe even a little less unique, but in a good way, I think. It's good to make these connections, whether they be with people or places or things.
Sometimes, it's fleeting at best. Gone as quickly as it came, but at least the moment happened.
For all the times that those connections aren't really happening, only small ones on more superficial levels...I am grateful for art and music and such things that allow me an outlet and a way to create my own connections and interpretations of life and all its experiences.
You go Sway with your typewritten homage (a better word escapes me at the moment). I want to hear all about it and see it when you get it done someday...promise? ;) (Yes, slacker, I'm gonna make sure you make this happen!)
In the meantime, speaking of typewriters...

Really Sway? Yay!
I actually love that album, Old Scool (sic) Hot Wings. It's Mississippi Hill Country Blues, all the way.
I picked it up last summer at the SNZ show and was surprised by just how much I liked it. Jimbo is a real character and he loves what he does. It comes through in his music, for sure.
Whether it's tossing back beers at the bar, or on stage playin' kazoo, that boy always has a good time.

Jimbo Mathus: well ain't that sweet. thanks. I do dig his crazy style too, well just what I can see from a few pictures, he looks like fun.
Smoking Pot: First question: why are you boiling your pot? haha, so witty...
But really, I'd want to know what kind of pot it was, if it's blackened that won't come off, or if it's just a dry and hot pot.
You need to provide me the tools with which to do my job.
but without further info, I would say if it is cleanable, use it, don't take out your err in judgement upon a poor pot, a pot which lives to be used. but, if it is all black and not cleanable, I would add it to your supply of camping pots, if you have such a cache.

Well I'm not a Mom (or a Dad :p), but my brother and I have been taking my niece to concerts since she could walk. Nothing like dancing with a little one at a show! :)
Couldn't take her to shows in bars of course, but there's tons of outdoor summer stuff, and lots of these are free ones so if she got too tired, we'd just head home early. Or, she'd crash out in her stroller.
She's a real music lover as a result and grabs her Daddy's arm at the first hint of a beat. No stage fright for this little girl. I think it's great.
As for babysitting and such, of course extended family is a huge help. If you are friends with other couples with kids, do babysitting trades with them for events, so you all benefit from some nites out together. Team up, use your resources.
Do group babysititng...have their child/ren over and hire a babysitter for all the kids so you can attend some events together as a group. Cost effective, too.
I bet Shark has some real good input on this with her three little lasses.

I usually don't go out more than once a month to something where I need a sitter, on average. I've really only left my daughter over night with my mom. She's 5. My daughter still doesn't usually sleep through the night (I know). Not that she wants much, but she usually crawls under my covers.
I was always one of those moms that was incredulous as they said their 8 month old went to bed at 7 pm and slept till 9 in the morn, without waking up.
Mine went bed at 8 or 9 and were up at 5 or 6, and up a couple times in between there...probably cause I'm a pushover, I can't let a baby cry.

Liet as long as you know he is okay, not hungry or hurt, let him be. It'll take a few nights, but you've got to change his sleeping pattern. I think you'll find if he is getting up in the middle of the night with no reward, then he'll stop.
My gals are 6 4 and 3. If I go to a show here their daddy watches them.

being a teacher, i thought it would be easy for me to let him just cry, but the tough love approach is much harder for me than i thought. logically, it makes sense, but i just don't want to!! miss shark, i definitely get it after reading your post. maybe we'll try it when on summer vacation
angi,
justin doesn't walk yet (but he has taken a few steps!!); we plan on bringing him to concerts with us whe he is a bit older. as for the babysitting over night, i can't bring myself to take my mom or kevin's mom up on the offer - i want to be the one there when/if he wakes up, etc, and don't want to burden enyone else (they will say it is not a burden)
sway,
you just told me what i wanted to hear, but hardly ever do. i don't mind babying him. someone once told me to do what i want to in my heart (but then my husband keeps bugging me to change it; i guess we have to come up with the decision together)

True, I don't know how you feel, how bad it is in comparison, but I think you've got allow yourself to feel the emotions, ride the dip, so you can climb back out.
These are natural emotions, considering all you've been going through.
That said, if it doesn't feel right, like worse than ever, at least keep talking, don't bottle it up. Hang in there Tinkerbell.

yeah it does still help- cause I believe my original query was related to my desire to put in print 'the last thoughts on woody guthrie' somewhere in my home- which I still haven't done. Perhaps serendipitously lazy, as now I'm considering the plan of putting it all up on my kitchen wall using that decoupage method (a la sweet p) and that font would make me happy, I know.
I like the GLAM font, cause it looks retro glamorous, yet also looks a little undone and used, with the tipped over 'G'. A stylisitic interpretation of what you might find inside.

Did you ever find a typewriter, Sway? My mom was just telling me that she has one in her basement that she got at a rummage sale and my niece loves playing with/on it, practicing her spelling and writing notes to her Mom. I remember doing the same thing at an aunt's house when I was about her same age.

I bought 3 rose plants in early september, got them for 3 for $30, end of the season price- as opposed to the usual season price $30 each-
but hmmmm, still haven't planted them yet. (OnTheBall)
do you think I could still plant them outside? it's starting to get close, or is, freezing at night.
or should I bring them inside for the winter? or should I just kiss them goodbye?
sweet p
12-06-2008, 03:16 PM
sway, i would bring them in for the winter. if you plant them now, the roots haven't had a chance to establish themselves and the cold temperature might kill them. i would find a sunny window, maybe prune them a bit, fertilize and wait til spring after the last freeze to plant them. that's my guess, anyways. don't kiss them goodbye, but if they died indoors at least you did your best and you're not any worse off than if you planted them outdoors and they died anyways. i'm not a rose expert, but i hope this helps...

so guess what, pham?? i have discovered my boss (for the petsitting) has been keeping my money!! i'll try to make this quick. i do a petsit for these folks that are clients from when my boss started her business(about 5 yrs. ago). i am unfortunate in the fact that i have the area that is most of her original clients and she refuses to tell these ppl. that the rates have gone up. i make $10/ sit that i do, so when she still charges some of these clients $11 or $12/sit, she obviously doesn't make as much money from it. hell, some of these clients still think it's HER that does the sits!! i just hope one day i don't get shot b/c these ppl. think there is a stranger in their home. anyways, this specific client, i have recently been communicating directly with them. that is what the client prefers especially since over christmas me and the client both discovered that my boss was basically telling her what she wanted to hear, even though it was absolutely wrong/not the truth. so, i try to keep track the best i can on what my boss charges these ppl. so i know if i have tips coming to me and whatnot. unfortunately, i have to TRUST what my boss is telling me, is the truth and i have discovered over the past several months, that she obviously is not very honest and i don't agree AT ALL with most of her business practices (hence, why i want to do the petsitting all on my own.) so, boss-lady tells me, for this client (several months ago) that their charge is $12/sit. well, i found out yesterday from the client, that she is only charged $11/sit!! you see, i pick up the checks from these ppl. which i then take to my bosses bank to deposit. and some weeks for this client, i do a sit once per day m-f and they leave a check for $60. so that would be a $5 tip for me-but my boss is fucking me over and keeping that shit for herself! i have been doing these clients on an almost weekly basis since the beginning of august!! that adds up! of course now i feel, well she lied to me about the charge for this client, how many other ones is she lying about...and keeping MY MONEY!! (as of late, i've had some financial difficulties...so DON'T FUCK WITH MY MONEY!!)
so my question is this...do i confront her about it or just keep my mouth shut, start my own business, and fuck her!? the problem i have with confronting is that it seems when i have done this kind of thing (at other jobs) ppl. just can't take it and they have fired me! for THEM being a piece of shit, and me saying how i honestly feel about the situation. i also wonder if i should keep my mouth shut and use this as future leverage. see, there was another petsitter that went off on her own and my boss felt it really hurt her business. well now, my boss has a "no compete", as she calls it, and thinks that gives her some kind of a leverage and would entitle her to sue anyone else who thought to do that. but, i'm an independent contractor, who has NEVER signed anything, so what she doesn't get is she is S.O.L.! she can't touch me! so when i start my own business and she finds out and tries to threaten to sue me, do i throw this back in her face that she basically kept monies from me and was as dishonest as they get?? what to do, pham, what to do??? all i know is i'm mad as hell at her, b/c i've always felt that when ppl. tell you major lies like this, they think you are just plain stupid and they can get away with it. i'll tell ya what, i may not have a college education, but i am NOT STUPID!! i'm so sick and tired of getting fucked over by these STUPID, OPPORTUNISTIC ppl. here in florida...see ppl. do SUCK here!! ARRRRRRGH!! so any help would be appreciated! Rags, you're the attorney, any thoughts?? i know every state has different labor laws, etc.
like i said, i'm still going to do my own pet sitting business-i know to some of you it sounds mundane; but i truly, truly LOVE it and i'm damn good at it....and i'm a very honest/trustworthy person whom both clients and pets love.
.....sorry for the profanity filled post, but hey-i'm pretty much staying true to form...right??:p

sweet p
01-09-2009, 02:12 PM
well...like i said, some of the clients don't even know that it's me that does the sits! a perfect example is this one client's dog had gotten upstairs and made a major runny mess. after spending about 40 minutes of cleaning up the best i could, i sent a text to my boss saying if i leave a note and sign my name, is he going to freak out? her reply: don't sign your name!! i try my best to keep things straight, b/c i am the one who picks up the checks and i am going by what she has told me their charge is. i can think of at least 5 different clients that have no clue it's me. and i feel this is soooo wrong and eventually it will come back to bite her in the ass. clients do unexpectedly, come home early!! (the reason why i hope i don't get shot!) she seems to have lost touch with the fact that we go into ppl.'s homes and if that were ME, i would want to know the person that is in my home. even if it's changed. it's dishonest to mislead the person and there is seriously no advantage to it and i would think, she would be much more likely to lose that client b/c of being dishonest. lately, i'm discovering that she is just wacko. over christmas, i was making a deposit and noticed that a check wasn't made out to the company name and it contained her name on the line. again, i texted her to ask what should i do with the check. her reply: SIGN MY NAME(meaning HER name) ON THE BACK AND TRY TO DEPOSIT IT!! whaaaaat? i immediately texted back: i will NOT sign YOUR name!!
i really have no interest in being arrested....

that's such a tough situation to be sp. i would probably sit down and figure out how many clients i was certain to fairly certain would utilize my services, sit down and really crunch the numbers. if you're not confident that you would be able to make it work then a confrontation is in order. but hopefully you will be able to make the break. i remember you not being terribly happy with your boss back in july and it seems like getting out from under her would be the best for your sanity. i know that you will do a phenomenal job with it, as that big heart of yours includes all animals (well except millipedes maybe:D)

yes, it a crappy position to be in! and no shark, you didn't misunderstand. the $60 check is from a client that knows it's me. boss is bonded and insured and that includes us on the policy. and the reason i found out about the charge on this client is b/c i was comfortable to ask what the charge was. well, a tip off came a few months back when i did 1 sit for these folks and they left $11 cash in an envelope. knowing the clients and the woman claiming herself to be a bit OCD, i knew that if the charge was indeed $12, $12 would have been in that envelope.
i've definitely worked the numbers and i know i would be able to make it work. i do need to actually write out a business plan first. i need to get a business license, get bonded and insured, get a website going and market, market, market. i will walk up and down neighborhoods distributing my info, if that's what it takes!! when i do these sits, you have no idea how many ppl. have dogs that i notice, so there are some PRIME neighborhoods to hit. car magnets are great, put some info in my vets office and others, too. i'm just a wee bit nervous about the whole prospect. ya know, that whole thing of being scared to be successful, but it is my time, i believe.
...and no millipedes!!
