I got to see Mike Doughty at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park last Friday night, did you?
I was so stoked to get to see him right in my backyard. The show was no disappointment either. I think he filled in for south-side-somebody who was gracious enough not to be able to make it. I'm a bottle of red and some good green into the evening and I thought I'd post my review. Just wish I was reviewing G's rocking chair benefit I missed saturday night, and for Chris Reeve no less.
It was a duet with Scrap Livingston on the cello. The whole dynamic of the duo created an intimate nature for the show. Lots of chitter chatter, you know, jersey style.(i find this enraging and strangely comforting all at once). Fortunately the boys were a chatter too... Andrew even refused to go fetch Mike's strings when he lost the first one...a fun little interlude. He later professed his love for dear old Mike which only encourages the jersey chanting. "We love Scrap, We love Scrap, We love Scrap..." The interaction back and forth was fun, you could tell the place was flooded with real Doughty fans.
I have to give Mr. Livingston a lot of credit for his impressive cellist abilities, especially since it's not his first instrument. My only annoyance was that the crowd cheered too loud and too early on his solos. That happens to Jimi Jazz all the time too. I don't think we heard half of what he's capable of. But it was cool to get such a glimpse of it. Even got to meet him briefly before heading out for the night.
Mike Doughty is a funny M-F'er...really. He can handle himself up there…even when everyone insists on incessantly yelling out song titles after he's made it clear not too. He lost two strings during the show. After the second he created a group conscience to the String Gods for their mercy. It was endearing and effective.
There was a five year old at the show and Mike acknowledged him and played his request. I didn't know if I should feel aawh or eewh.?.(a new mom reflex) They had the same hackie closing as the last time or two that I saw MD. It actually works because of the hack-factor. They announce the plan first...an announcement of the pre-last song, then the last song, then a 30 second silence before they turn back around and play the real last songs. Hacky, campy even. I really didn’t want that last-last-last-last song to come.
So here is a random list of what I remember hearing that night....no, he didn't play Fire truck, it was requested way to early. Madeline, Fort Hood, Soft Serve, Navigating by the Stars at Night, Blue Dress, Grey Ghost, Janine, 27 Jennifers (of course), Tremendous Brunettes (I'm blonde), Circles, Bottom of a Well, Triumphant Bells, Sugar plant, and the Hold em' Fold em' cover. Please note my above stated disclaimer (paragraph 1 sentence 5)and forgive me for my title mistakes, and all other grammar mistakes for that matter. As you can imagine this is only a sample of the free flowing tunes.
Overall it was a night in musical bliss at the pony last Saturday. We walked out of there with a new CD sold and signed by the man himself. Even got to connect with my friend Una, the butterfly lady. My hubby waited with a gaggle of other stalkers, I mean fans, to buy the special release CD. Right across the street they were filming the movie Exit 102, which he crashed while i dipped my toes in the ocean. Only two things could have made this a better show...close with St. Louise (personal preference) and sign that disc..."to your beautiful wife." Hehe…Thanks for reading.
