from Daytrotter.com This is something Langhorne Slim might say:
“The world could turn to hell, but at least we’ll never run out of Jack and thank mercy for buttless chaps.”
This is something Langhorne Slim might do: He might build his own very caboose and cell phone tower out of popsicle sticks and over-chewed Hubba Bubba.
This is something Langhorne Slim might raise: a jackalope.
He’s a story teller. He tells a whale of a story, whoppers, and he’s the charmingest son of a gun you’ll ever run across.

His music (especially his song Restless) makes me want to hop a train and just GO, who cares where, just get up and go somewhere and look out the window at the scenery racing away behind me.

You can sample a few songs here:
http://www.daytrotter.com/article/289/free-songs-langhorne-slim or check out his MySpace (www.myspace.com/langhorneslim).

Slim's a talented songwriter with perhaps a bit more rawness than Matt Costa, more twang in his music. Lyrics most can relate to...
Plus you've gotta at least smile at the notion that he named his backing band after his high school's mascot, The War Eagles. :p

Especially recommended if you are a singer-songwriter junkie like me.

Oh, and worth mentioning is that Malachi DeLorenzo, the drummer, is the son of Victor DeLorenzo, the original (and current) oh-so-animated yet simplistic drummer for The Violent Femmes. There are some vague similarities.

Langhorne Slim is in Los Angeles this weekend, and I'm itching for a roadtrip...

I'd have to race down to catch himFriday at Spaceland (http://clubspaceland.com/2008/friday-082208-langhorne-slim/) or I could ease on down the road to see him Saturday at the Sunset Junction Festival (http://www.sunsetjunction.org/streetfair_tickets.html).
Tickets for either event are under $20 and there's plenty of California to see on the return trip.

Can anyone size up the fest schedule here (http://www.sunsetjunction.org/streetfair_schedule.html) and tell me who's most worth seeing?

(Note, Isaac Hayes won't be making it :()

I'd love to stay long enough to catch !!! on Sunday evening...

Here's a really, um...crazy/bizarre/amusing/oddly symbolic(?!?) video for Restless (http://www.subterraneanblog.com/2008/08/21/langhorne-slim-restless/) that I thought you might enjoy.

Langhorne Slim is in Los Angeles this weekend, and I'm itching for a roadtrip...

And...next weekend it is! We have a half-day on Friday and then no obligations until Tuesday morning.
So it's gonna be Santa Barbara next Friday night!

he is one of the 26 artists to watch in paste magazine this month.

I can't watch all 26, so I'll just watch him, for now.

Any comments on that vid? I just rewatched it and almost peed myself.
That just seems like a concept you'd come up with high or drunk and think it brilliant...until the next morning, when you realize you were just really fucked up.

But...they went ahead anyways.

Really, most of all, I want to hear what Sway thinks of it. But I figure she pretty much ignores any music thread I start of the Avett/Langhorne/folksinger variety.

For a moment I tried to think of that vid as more artsy/conceptual, like the old Bjork running in the woods with the big bear mascot guy from years ago (Human Behavior), but um...nope, shrugged that thought off.
I just think it's a silly video and kind of a rip-off of the Tinman character from the Wizard of Oz. I do, however, like how much the dog's tail wags in the back of the pickup truck.

Damn, I really need to start class already. I've been idle far too long.
I do, however, like

HearYa Live Session 22: Langhorne Slim and The War Eagles (http://www.hearya.com/2008/07/10/hearya-live-session-22-langhorne-slim-and-the-war-eagles/)

Just found this six-track live session from the Chicago-based indie music blog HearYa.com...Makes me upset I missed their show last month in Santa Barb.

Tracks played: Hummingbird, Cut It Down, Nobody But You, Restless, Worries, and Colette (WITH the band!)
They're really fun.

Langhorne Slim @ Schuba's, Chicago
Mon, 03/16/2009 9:00 PM | $12

Something of a one-man mixture of the Cramps, Beck's early indie records (circa One Foot in the Grave), and the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou, singer and guitarist Langhorne Slim offers a sardonic, modern take on traditional folk, country, and blues.

"I’m not sure that there’s any other kind, but the songs I write are love songs. Some are literal, about specific events, people and relationships in my life; a form of therapy, self-help for the flowers and the shit along the road of life..."

You can stream Langhorne Slim's new album "Be Set Free" (which came out Tue 9/29, just like some other band (http://www.theavettbrothers.com)'s glorious major label debut) at AOL Spinner this week.

http://www.spinner.com/new-releases#/9

DO listen to it, it's pretty dang good. Different instrumentation than his past stuff, but shows tremendous range and depth in his lyrics, as per usual.

Start here:

His lyrics cut pretty deep. His live show is really hard to beat. I'm feeling him a little bit more even than the Avetts.
