....and a lukewarm predictable G performance.
quote of the night? after seeing J. Hammond perform earlier in the evening and then later Garrett for the first time my friend, big al, was asked what he thought of G Love. His response? "he's John Hammond with a light show" :)

yes, you can definitely hear John's immense influence on G's style of playing. when John first blew in that harmonica, i thought DAMN! i get it! but what was it you said, rags?? G needs about 30 years more of playing before he even gets to John's level. i would have to agree. something else that G will never be able to do is tell those incredible stories that we heard that night about all these Blues legends John has played with and who taught who how to play in certain styles and such. it was like watching a VH1 Storytellers performance. i didn't want to miss one word he said, i couldn't take my eyes off of him, small, small, small venue and GREAT people to enjoy that amazing evening with (in the front row!)-i knew i was witnessing something magical and something i would never forget! of all the shows i've seen, i would have to say that one is the BEST...EVER. i seriously felt like a changed woman after that, like i had been baptized by John and the Blues! i've been chasing that feeling i had that night for the past year and alas, yay! i am fortunate enough to try to capture it again and see him (minus the lovely company). i still watch my vids from that night and it still gives me goose bumps-hearing the feet stomping and the occaisional DAMN, DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!!!... that you, rags, had interjected along the way!:D GREAT F*CKING TIME!!
i would be more than happy to let you know how it was! i'm sure i'll want to share! here is a linkity link to one of my vids from that night-ENJOY!

i just saw this you turd!!
the show was excellent as i had thought it would be! the energy from the crowd was NOT like it was in chicago, but maybe that's b/c bradenton FL is not a blues mecca like great old chi-town. the venue was pretty cool just a bar with some tables and a stage (capacity about 250). so for dinner entertainment, i got to listen to john do his soundcheck as i ate my cheeseburger.
he played his heart out, some stuff we heard in chicago along with some others he didn't play. one that stands out is Frogs for Snakes. i think that's the title-a good little diddy. there were some sound issues, where there would be some static and such-blame that on the sound guy, whom john was giving some shit to before soundcheck. again, some absolutely fantastic stories were told. i swear, i just want to sit around a bonfire and listen to him tell stories! his voice is so soothing to me. well, i came pretty close to the bonfire situation, but instead me and john were smoking outside huddled around a propane heater and it was almost too damn cold to say anything!! earlier in the evening, i was out chatting and smoking with his wife Marla (or Martha??) i always screw her name up, but anyways she is cool as hell-a total hippie!
something i found interesting is when he started talking about g love producing Push comes to Shove, he started out saying that g love produced it, but then he said..."actually, my wife produced it but g love had a lot of fun and i hope he learned something from it." hmmm...ouch! so that kind of suprised me. sorry, garrett-looks like you have been demoted!!
all in all a fantastic show and of course i will see him again when i can. oh, one thing that i got a kick out of was he had started this song and when it came time to blow in the harmonica, it was the wrong one he had. so, he says "i have to switch my harmonica", the guitar stops but that foot was still just stomping keeping time as he made the switch and he went effortlessly back in to the song, right on beat! love him!!
so, rags-you going to catch him at schuba's, again??

I imagine you JH fans likely know this, but coming from the Tom Waits angle, where I've been dwelling for a while- I thought this was pretty interesting- wicked grin, an album of covers of TW songs, and Tw producing- not new.

Didn't go. :( Life got in the way. It was a weird week. Sick Sun - Tuesday. Secretaries week events to plan and attend. Little league games. Daddy/Daughter dance Saturday. I just didn't have the time to take a night and run into the city.

Jorie, you're right...I keep tabs on my local shows, but I can always use an extra push! (as long as it's a weekend and I'm not broke)
I was hanging out on a Friday night saying "Should I or shouldn't I?" because Oakland is 2 hours away and I had to pick someone up at the San Jose airport at 9am the next day...
So what did I do? Well, I went of course! It was one of Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica blowouts, a great showcase of several artists and then they all get together for a long jam at the end. Fun night, chatted a bit with Marla & Mr H afterwards (also while he was smoking) but they were exhausted cuz they flew in from the East Coast that day (and man, were their arms tired! :rimshot: :p)
After the show, I didn't feel like driving all the way home only to turn around the next morning and drive an hour & a half back to San Jose. So...I drove across the bay to San Fran, slept in the backseat of the car, and woke up to watch the sunrise at the Golden Gate Bridge. Soundtrack was JH's latest album that I'd picked up the nite before.
I then had a lovely breakfast, took a walk in Muir Woods, and drove to San Jose, picking my friend up on the way home. (And took a long nap in my bed to make up for the crappy sleep the nite before)
Hell of a way to start off a weekend! Who said the military would kill my free spirit?
