Mike Doughty and Andrew Livingston – Mexicali Blues 1/31/09

Great Show, great food. I’m sure it helped that I was hungry but the crab cakes and the shrimp were delicious, one could say golden delicious. The little place was pretty full too and I must add that the bar/seating reconfiguration really helped open up the feel of the place. The dinner music was a little too much, once I almost dozed off…although MMW&S was a nice respite.

Mike Doughty publicly admitted his distain for “talking” during the show. Didn’t anyone ever tell him there’s no crying in baseball. I think I have a helpful suggestion, turn down the volume a little. It’s not near as offensive when someone is whispering. Plus my ears are ringing as we speak and it’s not the triumphant kind. At one point, I actually felt like I was in a behavioral modification experiment, a fun, and silly loud one.

As usual the banter between the boys was delightful and they did this great little bit with a question jar. It must have been jammed full…What was your last text message? Skype with me? Stare at me longingly? Is Scrap’s first name really Andrew? Why are you my life? (a rather scary, possibly pathological thought)What key am I in? Will you play with a fuller band soon? Blah blah blah clean time? Did you feel your anonymity broken? Did it bother you? Why be nice to each other? Something about fucking and republicans?…

I’ve often thought of Scrap as incredibly proficient…if that’s not clear I’d like to add gifted, adept, capable, talented, skillful, poetic, freaking awesome and a damn good musician. I particularly enjoy when he’s on cello. I say play on as a duo until it burns out. The whole show experience is cute and clever and obviously the music and lyrics are on point.

They didn’t play Fort Hood or St. Louise and I’ve had it with brunettes named Jennifer. I don’t care how many Mike’s Jennifer went to school with and I’m blonde, naturally…I did find Mike Doughty to look very sharp tonight in his Eddie Bauer? Or was it Kenneth cole? No, J Crew, yeah that’s it.

As I reread above I notice an imbalance of cynicism. Sorry. It really was a great show. I just had to leave abruptly at 11 to go outside and make a work call in response to an adolescent client in crisis. i-yie-yie! Then I had to work all the way home, blessed be my gracious and supportive husband.
