crunchy granola

Mike Doughty at the Pony May 22, 2009...And Scrap two, I mean too, pun rather intended as it is the duet that inspires this purely indulgent review. Turns out “Scrapple” is ok with him. Scrapple, porkroll, bacon, shit even sausage is fine as long as he plays the cello. The good music being produced off that modest string instrument was surprisingly sensational.
I am never good with the set-list part of my account so I’ll just get it over with now…I am certain I heard St. Louise(a personal favorite), Triumphant Bells, Brunettes, Jennifer, Circles,…(no surprises with the later three), Gratified (a new one which I really liked) and My Name is Earl. I did have an odd realization… Somehow my ears hear Grey Ghost at each song intro. Yeah, odd right? Am I being stalked by the dis-ease?
Got schooled by the question jar.. there is a superpower deli-in-the-pocket which may be more desirable than 2 mil in cash or going back in time to Soul Coughing, not-doing-it is a bona fide least favorite position, salad and cake have been united, How is a question and a greeting…Ahh the question jar…endless crowd pleasers. Had several low-down belly chuckles and that my friend is the making of a good all-around show.
The new cd was SOLD OUT? I could’ve had a totally stellar ride home to the new digs…the F stop…recorded in a bucket or the barrel of a shotgun or someplace like that. Anyway, after my beach shenanigans (spinal stretch, sun breath, toes in the sand, a prayer, et cetera) and getting talked out of five bucks by a Benny(that’s what he called himself), I return… only to wait impatiently in a line where no cd existed. I should have just stayed put because the tunes that went on after the last last last song were excellent and danceable and I fear I’ll never know who it was…
I missed Bill Mahr for this rock and roll extravaganza so I made some new rules myself… New Rule: A sign must be posted after the cd’s sell-out to read “Awkward Hugs and Excessive Photos -Line Here” New Rule: If you insist on bringing a small child to a show, earplugs are mandatory Jackass and don't stay until the end of the night, for the child’s sake. New Rule: Once bitten twice shy..no more hackie show endings. Just play till your done, we’ll clap and maybe work you over for an authentic encore. We all know how much a Jersey crowd loves to chant.
On the whole, a crunchy good time. Missed Nicole Atkin’s and Mike had some minor problems with his voice which struck me like a c sharp…probably because it’s the first time I’ve ever noticed him vocally hiccup.. I hope he’s not using up all his Jing. Rest up dearheart...be well. the playback highlight would be my stop and chat with Scrap who held no secret stash of CD’s but was pleasant and gentlemanly. Thanks for taking the read...
