Went to see T-Model Ford backed by Gravel Road @ Johnny Brenda’s Bar in Philly last week, a very interesting neighborhood… It always takes going to Philly to remember how much I love the energy of the city and its people. It also takes about one block to understand why it has the nickname Philthy. At least three times from the car to the venue I smelled a stench that was so vile and intense it was unidentifiable to the common nose. I cannot imagine what goes on to create such rotten winds.
The bar was a great little joint with a cool crowd, lots of co-ed tables full of healthy and vital young people, pool table, clean bathrooms and good tunes on the juke. The show was upstairs and one could come and go at leisure, always a plus for the smoker types and the newer mom types...
Yo…changing’ gears. Although t-model was a worthy show...I’ve decided to merge this review with tonight’s serendipitous encounter with other good music…Also experienced in Philly-town. This time, Xavier Rudd at the Theater of the Living Arts…
Does it sound unbelievable that the night started by colliding paths with Xav as we headed out onto South Street from the garage. I was, I must admit, a bit star struck. A little like a Jersey deer in the headlights on some dark pined road. None the less, the hubby was on his game and asked to snap a shot of us, right there on the corner... haight/ashbury style. XR was humble, grateful and gracious, just glowing about his new band.
And glow they did, Luminescent… What an uplift to the show… pouring off the music and the crowd. I was in moments transported to some higher consciousness; a pleasant and healing reverb, a peaceful warrior like orientation, a streaming flow…and now this commercial from our metaphysical sponsor...
Musically the new guys , who probably have names, challenge, entice and enhance that whole orchestra...l especially loved the added vocals. I had such a rocking good time, and boogied and boogied and boogied. ..“Oh the earth was made for lovers, for damsel, and hopeless swain, for sighing, and gentle whispering, and unity made of twain”...Emily Dickenson and she’d have cherished the show as if it were a valentine too.
As if the “bump into” and subsequent “stop and chat” wasn’t enough, my Valentine was topped with a drum stick, naturally wooden, of course…and a safe ride home to my darling child, sleeping soundly. I left philly with a new musical instrument, rad pictures and a burger from Johnny rocket where we put food in our bellies and visited with my husband’s cousin Aubrey, the best rock-n-roll waitress in two counties! Thanks for reading…I hope you understand my need to tell of this lovely encounter. Plus it seemed necessary to review something other than another Mike Doughty show, as much as I love the question jar…p.s. sorry no setlist, but take it from me, he played everything good.
