Been trying to write this review for days and have finally decided the real review, the funky good times, with Hencoop, while taking in Michael Franti and homemade margaritas, is the true storyline of the night. The venue, “WAY westside...hoboken? Where the F are we?”(twitter), was nonetheless a fabulous little hall, with two upper levels, a sedated VIP section, and the unlikely starting place of a much needed first day of kindergarten kind of encounter.
Michael Franti, Spearhead and Cherine Anderson rocked Terminal Five, a really really good time for a Tuesday night. Because I had already seen MF this summer (near UMASS), I didn’t actually believe I’d be seeing them again so soon… And then there was a twicket...an offering, the timing of which facilitated the inspiration needed to head on into Manhattan solo and meet up with someone I never knew.. I never knew..
From the moment she climbed into my rig I was certain to be in the company of a kindred spirit, a real booty shaking rebel rocker…she was armed with drinks in convenient carrying cups, eco-friendly I believe, and had the low down on the undercover po po giving party goers the shakedown. So off to find parking, a free spot no less, which wasn’t fully appreciated until we got out of the car and noticed we were parked in front of the NY Police Athletic League…Protect and Serve, at least I knew the hybrid would be safe!
I’m pretty sure the band was coming on as we entered; sure felt like the party kicked up three notches and I like to think we didn’t miss anything..The crowd was a groovy, funky bunch, much more cohesive than the crowd at Nokia theatre this winter. It felt incredibly special this night of music with “Hey, I love you” hanging in the top 40.
As much as we would have loved to bump into Michael Franti in the middle of the road the universe had another plan, the divine Miss Cherine…She was so gracious, as authentic in presence as my fair show-date. So we got some delightful pictures and were each gifted a copy of her CD, which was especially stellar since she was sold out when I met her in Massachusetts . It’s a great CD by the way, am glad to own it and you should too.
Overall, this experience was an incredible one culminating in a lovely new friendship and our safe passage home, in spite of my detour through Hobawkin…Weehoken….Bumblesmokin’. Obviously the music and vibe were amazing but even more important was the human element, the real stuff, the courage and tenacity, to bust-out and be. My cup overflowith… Thanks again Dearheart!
PS, My playback highlight is rather a private moment not to be giggled about here! -Crunchygrl
